I kind of thought that at first too, but it looks to me like we are playing through Link's past resist urge to make LttP joke. At least that's the impression I got considering all those NPCs are technically dead during the actual game, and only exist in the flashbacks, and Link is interacting with them and they are not in their weird green glowy ghost form, so they are alive here. Or they could just be more flashback memories to collect. I dunno. Either way, it looks awesome. Like a.. second quest.

So far I'm kinda underwhelmed on the new DLC.

Royal Guard's equipment. Non-upgradable which is still really dumb for DLC equipment and the hint "on the second floor" isn't near where the hat is in the slightest. For reference it is actually

In the room with Calamity Ganon. You have to pull it out with Magnesis from a higher floor or you trigger the fight. So much for simply on the second floor as the hint says.

 

I also started the Champion's Ballad which is yet another time where you can get OHKO'd from anything. Why are we so obsessed with doing this? Even the first DLC pack was essentially the same thing. I don't find "get hit once, start over and have to waste x amount of time to get back to where you were" interesting or fun. It's downright tedious and boring because a Guardian fired pre-maturely or you were hit by a Lizalfos with its spit.

 

The short-range, OHKO weapon (which has to charge after two uses, REALLY?) is also dumb. Why can't we drop the weapon gimmick for once? Not like it breaks the game to have it without needing to be charged. You're screwed in this without Lynel Bows as far as I'm concerned anyway with how many enemies get projectile weapons that you can't safely approach.

 

I haven't gotten too far on it yet as my Wii U took ages to do the update. 1 shrine down on the Ballad and the one equipment set done.

Continued on with the Ballad. Perhaps I'm being too harsh and it is hard to excite me nowadays, but this feel like they were unmotivated coming up with trials based on each Champion's region. Oh and LOOOOOONNNNNGGGG unskippable songs with Kass that I couldn't care less about.

Hit the horn on Dinraal with an Arrow.

Shield Surf through a bunch of checkpoints.

Shoot 4 targets in a single Flurry? with the bow.

 

Mipha:

Swim through sunlight and touch a blue ring.

Kill a handful of flying Guardians and one upgraded stationary Guardian from Hyrule Castle. For some reason the Master Sword doesn't get its boost against these.

Swim up a number of waterfalls through blue rings. Probably the lamest trial since you don't have to do anything while going up waterfalls.

 

Daruk:

Go through more Blue rings. You have to climb a little.

Stand on a magnetic box where a blue ring is within lava without falling into the lava.

Kill a Igneous Talus. More health, doesn't leave the lava but has a constant updraft.

 

Urbosa:

Ride a Sand Seal through some more blue rings.

Re-do the last room of the Yiga hideout.

Kill a Molduga with more health.

After doing these trials, you get a final trial in each region. But don't worry you've done it before too.

Rematch with the blights. This time you are restricted to what armor and weapons they give you. Oh and it it hard as heck to see because the arenas are all dark and the camera likes to randomly eff things up against Fireblight and Thunderblight. You can partially cheese them with Urbosa's Fury still. Some of the Master Mode variants can apparently leave you in unwinnable situations of this due to health regeneration. If true, good going beta testing team. I guess in theory you could still bomb them to death?

 

The reward for this?

A cutscene on how Zelda met each Champion and Faster recharge on the Champion powers. Meh. Give me Master Sword that doesn't have to recharge next time. Or a bow that fires 100 arrows or something.

 

There are shrines unlocked too of course with some being decent. Just they're all fairly short and one I literally just walked through the flames with the upgraded suit since apparently they forgot it exists and completely cheesed the shrine. Like um devs?

 

Just opened up the new "dungeon" by doing all of that too. Will probably do it later on.

Finished the DLC. Ultimately, I'd say I'm satisfied with it. The new dungeon was actually really fun (if not erring a bit on the short end), and I enjoyed the new shrines highly for the most part. The puzzles to get to them... a little silly, but locating them was fun at least. Plus I enjoyed looking for the new outfits via small hints given in journals, just like the first DLC pack. Gonna spoiler the rest of this just in case.

I loved all the story additions, honestly. It strengthened the lore some and even improved the character development. The cutscenes were good, and the journals left by the Champions were great. Mostly. Revali's still a jerk. I almost started to feel for him during his cutscene but his journal tossed aside any positive feelings I had towards the guy. Too bad Zelda's and Mipha's actors didn't improve between recording sessions, though...

 

The final divine beast was really really cool. I wish it was a little larger but it was fun to navigate and figure out, full of little "Aha!" moments. I like that about it. And the boss of it... Hoo boy, that was actually probably the best boss in the game. Got easier in the final phase but the opening phases were fun and kept me on my toes. Was never in danger of death but it at least required a lot more effort than the other bosses. It was also unexpected and a fun surprise.

 

The bike seems cool and somehow I buy that this exists in the Zelda universe... although I found it a bit silly they kept referring to it as their "masterpiece." Either way, I didn't use it much. Just rode it straight to the castle, fought Ganon on it, and that's it. I'd play around some more, but...

 

Back to Xenoblade 2.

I got bored and sold literally everything I could sell. And the results?

Thoughts on the DLC so far, kind of rambling:

Minor spoilers (rewards, and characters)

I have completed two out of the four sets of new goals, and am working on the third. I like the new shrines mostly, and the new cutscenes are nice so far. Mipha is still bae, and it was so cute to see a baby Prince Sidon. I didn't know there was that much of an age difference between them, and I like the way these cutscenes add more to the characters. I even like Revali's. I like him anyway, in spite of his attitude, and think he probably has the strongest voice acting here. Or his is at least the most believable for me anyway. I just wish you could rewatch these like the other memories. I've only seen two of these so far, so I will hold off on saying much more. I'm currently working though the Gerudo line of trials, and will be doing Death Mountain last. I did Rito, then Zora.

 

The shrines could be a bit bigger, but what is here is fun enough. I found the one with the vertical sliding metal blocks to be kind of annoying, but it was still pretty clever. I feel like it has a lot of solutions. Also, the ice block melting one was kinda weak. It relies too much on waiting around, and I feel like they could have had a better ice puzzle. I like the electricity based puzzles quite a lot too. Too bad you can only get one heart (so far?). I was really hoping to get all 30 hearts here. The ways you unlock some of the shrines are fun, but some of them feel a little forced, or are pretty easy (two of the Zora ones in particular). The Rings in the desert, and on Hebra mountain were fun though. I wish there were more of those, tbh, cause it makes good use of some of the vastness those areas provide. I particularly liked the Test of Strength shrine on the plateau because I always wondered just what is down there in that hole. Well, now we know. It made the kid in me very happy for some reason.

 

As for the boss rematches.. eh.. I could take them or leave them. I'd have liked to have seen new bosses, or better yet, four new beast interiors like a true second quest. The Waterblight fight was really annoying, cause I must've been missing out on something. I was able to get to the second form really quickly, but that second form.. woo. I ended up cheesing it with Urbosa's Fury, but yeah, I just didn't know what to do with no shield, and only 10 arrows. I'm thinking it wanted me to throw one of the weaker spears to bring it down, then wail on it with the good one, but I was tired of those ice blocks. I even tried making a pillar of ice to stab it from, which kind of worked, but not as well as I would have liked.

 

I'm a little sad, because I started playing this on my completed file, so I won't have much use for the bike, but it'll still be fun to mess around with, I'm sure. Same goes for the shorter recharge times since once I'm done with these, there's not much else to do that will make them important. Still cool though, and would be useful in a new playthrough. Also, this means Link's appearance in MK8 is canon. All in all, I'm pretty happy with this so far. It's certainly more content than I expected, and most of it is decent. I'll edit this when I finish it. I'm just kind of taking my time.
