Having gained the bomb upgrade and cleared the above room of skells and bats to get the key, I'm completely lost where to go from there.

guess you are in level 1 if you have the key from the room above the bomb upgrade then go back to the screen above the dodongo and push a statue

Apparently my Zelda skills are really rusty.
I'd swear I pushed those statues every way but up, blast.

And apparently the hookshot doesn't work to get the first Bow now.

It works on the right statue but don't go stand against the edge of the lave step a little back
