So, I'm making some cave systems in this one area in my quest. Originally, the caves looked like this:

But I was looking at other screens, and I realized that most designers don't extend past the wall. They look something like this:

But the edge of the wall tiles look almost cut off, so I came up with this:

I don't know which is the best route to go. I like all three.

Personally I like the first the most. Using Classic mountains and Gameboy cave walls together is a bit weird, but the screen has a good sense of depth to it. If you really want the black void effect going on you're probably going to want to do some tile edits, cut the green off the upper edges of the cave walls to make it look less cutoff or have an outline of tiles with dithering. Sort of like what you have in the third screen, but with more rounded at the edges on the inner and outer corners so it looks more natural.

I like the 3rd the best. The First Screenshot's color Pallete, use of Z1 Mountains, GB caves, And Trees, doesn't look that much like a cave, and instead looks more like an outdoor area.

You could probably make the first design work if you changed the color pallete to something more cavelike, like brown. Then it would look a lot better.

It really depends on the feel your going for. But for the actually screens I personally like all of them...

Here's something I did to make the black not make the walls look cut off:

I dislike the way the 3rd screen of yours looks, and like the 1st the most. That's just my opinion though.

What quest is this from? It looks very interesting.

I'd determine what to use based on ceiling height. The first shot is definitely a very open cavern with a tall ceiling. Now for cramped caves with low ceilings, I'd go with the approach Avataro posted where it goes direct to black but is not a straight-line cutoff.
