question for clarification. are we talking original gameboy tiles from the actual games, or are you including modified/enhanced ones like the cambria set? is it some kind of hybrid?

It's both. This set aims to essentially be a Cambria for the Gameboy tileset.

I'm wondering how this is going to be different from the soon-to-be-released Vintage Dreams tileset, that one already seems to have a lot of (if not complete) 2.55 compatibility.
Otherwise always a good endeavour to create a new tileset, looking forward to the results :-)

From my understanding, the main difference is Vintage Dreams is essentially an updated gb for 2.55 which includes some custom assets, while the focus of Pocket Tileset is going to bring together all the major custom GB assets while being a modernized GB tileset. Big difference of scale for custom stuff and a different focus.

Hmmm, my only concerns with this are the possibility of there being too many assets in the tileset straight up, but that's me being a contrarian rather than anything else. I think what's made EZGBZ easy to use - and for so long too - was the fact that it's rather modular, and that you can add extra assets without being too concerned about having too much to pick from. Not to say that I think additional details shouldn't be included, rather that it shouldn't be forgotten what made EZGBZ/CGBZ good, easy-to-use tilesets to begin with compared to say... DoR or even Pure.
If anything, the current tileset probably just needs more of an overhaul in terms of layouts, 2.55 features and palettes.
on the other hand, please please please make the BGB-filtered palettes the norm oh my god I can't wait for a new standard GB tileset that looks aesthetically appealing out of the box

That is something I've noticed. It's hard to quantify the peak number of assets to have for different things that pushes a tileset forward and make it genuinely more useful as opposed to being overwhelming/cluttered/noisy (no shade to current tilesets, I realize saying this might come across as scathing given there's only like 4 tileset families and 6 total tilesets people use). I think GB has room to add new fresh assets geared towards making modern day quests with modern day features, rather than focusing on encapsulating literally the sprites found in the GB zeldas. Plus it offers the opportunity to make a tileset that is less dependent on actual nintendo assets, although I realize only a portion of assets are going to be truly fully custom.
