ZC Default button arrangement:

+---+---+
|Ex3|Ex4|
+---+---+
|Ex1|Ex2|
+---+---+
| L | R |
+---+---+
| A | B |
+---+---+

Modern controller arrangement:

+---+---+---+---+
|Ex3| L | R |Ex4|
+---+---+---+---+
    |Ex1|Ex2|
    +---+---+
    | A | B |
    +---+---+

Ex3 and Ex4 can be put wherever. But they are positioned here to imitate L/R2. SNES layout is the same, but without the Ex3/Ex4 placements.

SEGA arrangement:

+---+ +---+
| L | | R |
+---+---+---+
|Ex2|Ex3|Ex4|
+---+---+---+
| A | B |Ex1|
+---+---+---+

L and R can be put wherever. But they are positioned above.

If you had scripted commands, which positions would you place them on the passive subscreen?

Why is there no Super Famicom/SNES option?

I'd almost say here, that I'd prefer this:

[ex1][ex2][ex3][ex4]
[L][B][A][R]

...except that Ex1/Ex2 would bemapped to Y and A, while B and A would be X and B, for me, IIRC.

Most modern controllers use the SNES layout, the only difference being the additional two shoulder buttons.

You switched up A and B. But yeah I'd put the Ex buttons anywhere I like, as long as Ex2 is never to the left of Ex1 (and same with 4 and 3).
