Finally another stage shown off, this time with Classic Sonic. And... it looks really dull. This coming from someone who likes Casino Night Zone. Is it just me or is it very linear-looking too? And that music is... not good at all really. One part makes me think it's about to play the Inspector Gadget theme song.

Yeah, looking past the fact that it's a pinball level... there's not a lot going for it. I definitely get the linear complaint; there's really only one path through the level. It branches at a few spots but rejoins almost instantly. And there's not really any enemies and minimal traps. It seems very uninspired. I guess the classic Sonic gameplay's no better than the modern Sonic stuff we've already seen.

When I first saw that level, I thought it looked dumb, but it looks ok. I'm definitely picking up on the Inspector Gadget vibes too. I'm going to guess there is some story reason the areas are mixed together like this, since Green Hill has desert elements, and what looks like snowy areas in the background. But, really, Casino Forest? That seems so ridiculous it might just work.

And yeah, the level looks short, but I don't think we're seeing all of it. By that I mean, there's no way of knowing for sure that is the beginning of the level. We also don't know for sure if those paths that join again quickly don't have something further if you stay up top, and those rejoin areas are for falls from that upper area. EDIT: After re watching the Shadow level, I am certain these aren't whole levels. Shadow starts right before hitting a check point. That wouldn't make sense if that was right at the beginning. :P

But hey, I'm just waiting for the JP only Hooters Haven level.  :bounce:

I get the feeling they blew the budget on Modern Sonic's soundtrack and that's why Classic's sucks so far.

If only the visualizer in the video was in sync with the music...

So. A demo was released in Japan for Switch. It includes three stages: One for modern Sonic, one for the avatar character, and a boss stage for Classic Sonic. Also a one-minute time limit on each level. The game literally only lets you play the level for a minute before it fades to black and places a "Thanks for playing!" message on screen, plays a trailer (which you can skip), then goes back to the level select. You can see this in action here:

And yes. That's modern Sonic in Green Hill. Again.

I actually went and downloaded it myself as well thanks to the power of region-free consoles. Tried it out. Surprisingly it actually controls really well for all three characters, so that bit's pleasing. Unfortunately as far as the level design goes there's not a lot to say for satisfying platform. The behind-the-back segments are straight lines with barely any obstacles, the 2D sections not much more interesting. So in that sense it basically adds up to the video footage we've seen so far.

Maybe later levels get better, but even the first levels of Generations and Unleashed had better and more fulfilling third-person platforming than this. As it stands... I don't have much faith in it as a game and likely won't be buying it anytime soon. Then again, what else did I expect from the director of Sonic Colors, which also had a similar design philosophy of "boring gameplay with little-to-no third-person platforming."

There's a guy I like on YouTube called "MegaGWolf", who has an entire series dedicated to various Sonic projects and showing them off to people. He's a huge Sonic fan, and he's got a first-reactions video for the demo. When I say "first reaction", I mean it. He had no idea that the time limit was so short until it cut him off mid-level, and his reaction was priceless. (Considering every other Sonic game has the timer count up, while this one counts down, it probably helped hide the fact that the limit was so short if he glanced over and saw 30 seconds or so.)

I've said it before, but yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the boost formula. The only platforming I've seen is in those clunky 2D segments, and it just looks very blah to me. Not terrible, but not ground breaking either. I will be passing on this, probably till its on sale on steam if anything.

Bad news, guys:

https://gonintendo.c...eet-date-broken

A retailer broke the street date of Sonic Forces, causing some people to get it early. SEGA's already trying to shut down any streams of the game to prevent spoilers from being leaked.

What is with these retailers breaking the street dates? First Sonic Mania, then Super Mario Odyssey, now Sonic Forces!

Also, it's been confirmed that the US & Europe won't be getting the demo for some reason.

I'm watching someone stream this, and it actually looks like it might be good. I have a feeling it will be short, but it does look different from generations in a few ways, and not like a clone like I thought. I might get it, but.. not for $60.

It's $40.

$40 too much, proving my converse opinion. I stopped thinking it had any chance of being a good game quite some time ago. I haven't yet watched a full stream of it but it still doesn't look good or interesting to me. I did watch all the story cutscenes... and it's terrible and a wasted potential. I wanted at least something ironically enjoyable, damn it! Couldn't even give me that. :(

So actually there's lots of dialogue outside of cutscenes. (But no, it doesn't make the story any better)

I feel eh about this game. :(

Huh, it is only 40. That's probably a good move. Wasn't generations 60, or 50? I don't remember.

I might grab it if it goes on sale or something. Classic Sonic looks meh, and downright bad after Mania, and I'm not a fan of whisps at all. The OC and Sonic stages look alright, but really short.

Why does Modern Sonic have 2D sections? Isn't that the thing of Classic Sonic? Or do both have 2D and 3D sections? I think it would be better if Modern Sonic only handled the 3D sections, because giving 2D sections to him just makes Classic Sonic kind of pointless from a gameplay perspective.
