Although a good number of these sites are familiar to me, this certainly serves as a very useful reference. Convenience should not be underestimated. Prior to this, I was not aware of there being PDF programs other than Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat. Nonetheless, I do know about open office, as it is good for those who are either anti-Microsoft or use Linux.

By the way, I know of another free program that some of you may be interested in. If you ever want to audit your PC, yet keep it confidential, you can use Belarc Advisor. It is very handy when you need to check your system requirements before installing any new software.

Someone needs to add mIRC to the list of IRC clients (all of the IRC clients are outdated except X-Chat), and Opera to the list of web browsers (all of those browsers are gecko-based, and I </3 gecko >_<).

May I propose that you add subsections to keep things neater?

Add an MIDI subsection under Audio and add Anvil Studio :].

Also, *LINK*.

Or hate to arse with the MS Office that comes with XP icon_wink.gif. I had to find the individual Word Processor program and link to it. Of course, at the time, I wasn't as savy with computers :>.

Change the link, www.grisoft.com, to http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1. That's the free version of AVG.

[edit]

Oh, and you forgot to seperate the Archive/Compressor programs from the Audio tools.

Also, I think you should add Notepad++ to the list. It's a programming tool, I think, but it's technically a Text Editing Program.

Do any of those audio tools convert MIDI's to .wav's?

I'm not sure how picky this list is supposed to be. Both of them can be used free of charge, but they are both labeled as shareware (though Opera is more adware than shareware). Both of them have some sort of nag, whether it be a banner ad or a dialog box at every startup. Then again, X-Chat for Windows (except unofficial builds) is shareware and X-Chat is there. icon_shrug.gif

I can think of a few things that could be added, but I'll have to gather the urls... and I won't have time for such a task until I arrive home for the weekend tomorrow.

Audacity, the first one, is a freeware program (a really nice one) that can convert anything your computer plays into a WAV or MP3, which is my method of ripping sound from games. So you could just hit the record option on that and then play the MIDI, and save it as a WAV afterwards.

Add NSIS (Nullsoft Scriptable Install System), an open source install creating program, to your list icon_biggrin.gif.

[edit]

Don't forget Notepad++ icon_wink.gif.

Oh, and add NVU, a GREAT HTML-editing/web-authoring program.
