hello friends

41lDJPQW7bL._AC_.jpg

Over the last couple months, I've had the itch to mess around in ZC for the first time in...well, ages. Frankly, though, I'm not really sure where to start. I haven't touched Z-Quest since 2.10. Like, old website days. I'm not really sure how scripts work, not sure what the capabilities of advanced music are, etc., or how important these newer (now probably considered standard) features have become to creating a fun/unique/exciting quest experience. Sooo, a couple of things...

For starters, I have a Macbook. :upside: First barrier! I have no access to another type of device. Do any other Apple users have experience running ZC on a virtual system? Good? Bad? Should I consider using an older version? Will that suck?

Secondly, how intuitive is it to implement scripts or to use other new features? Am I really jumping into the deep end if I try to be like the cool kids? Again, should I consider using an older version, will that suck, etc.?

TRULY FEEL LIKE I GRAMPY HERE BUT IT'S FINE

i don't have anything helpful to say, but i'm just gonna piggyback off of this. i don't know the first thing about scripts or what you can do in 2.55 that you had to jury-rig in 1.82. i'd love to dabble a little bit in zq this summer but i'll need to rely on whatever information gets revealed here

I would definitely use a recent version, so you have the option to use the new features if you feel like it. Even if you don't, the newer versions still have all the features the old ones had, and they still work the same way.

I don't know anything about using Apple devices with ZC, but I know things about scripting.

Implementing simple "Quality of Quest" scripts (such as talking to NPC's, chests, multiple lock blocks in a room, etc.) are very easy to implement and nobody should be scared off from using them.  They're very easy to import, usually very easy to implement on screens.  Anything that Moosh has put into the database is pretty much the gold standard of usability by someone with no scripting experience, imo.  You can always post on the forum or ask questions in the #zc-scripting channel on the PureZC Discord - there are a lot of people that can troubleshoot these scripts because their use is so common.  Some of the easy "core" scripts I'd recommend are:Doing anything with custom enemies is more intensive (usually such scripts use a custom header called Ghost.zh which requires a fair bit of setup) but it's certainly doable if you can do the other scripts as well, and there are a lot of custom enemy scripts in the database. Moosh has also made a "Newbie Boss" script that lets you customize a ton of boss parameters... I've never used it since I'm not the target audience, but it's got good reviews for people that want to customize better bosses but don't have scripting experience: Moosh's Newbie Boss. Surely a lot easier and better than combo-cycling bosses.

If you're coming off of 2.10, there are a number of new engine features - such as new combo types (built-in bottomless pits!) and an hugely expanded enemy and item editor. This is all stuff you can get from starting with a 2.5-ready tileset and just going through all the tabs. Generally now you have way more control over things like sound effects (you can set individual secret sounds for screens, override the default sounds for certain combo types, etc.) as well.

Since Mac stopped support for 32-bit appications, you should try Wine to run the most recent 2.55 alpha.

This is a great help, thank you! I remember using warps for NPC conversations and treasure chests before and it was always so clunky. I'll definitely look into these scripts once I get the program up and running.

Ooh, interesting. I'd not heard of Wine but this looks like a viable option! I'll give it a try.

Wine is a layer that can run Windows applications on other operating systems.
