In this installment of the Metroid series, Samus has been sent to the metroid homeworld of SR388 to destroy every metroid she can find. Presumably, this was to prevent the space pirates from making use of them again, but I can only imagine how PETA would have felt. At any rate, Metroid 2 is unique to the series, both in that there is technically not a "villain" to fight, and it debuted power-ups that would become staples in future games, like the Spazer Beam, Plasma Beam, Space Jump and Spring Ball.
This is a blind run and looking at maps will (hopefully) be kept to a minimum. Don't expect 100% completion.
