Ill be that guy....Im definitely a "Genwunner". Theres just too much that I like about the R/B/Y/G games, especially how bad they can be broken. Its like I never have to play it the same way, and I can get together a whole party before I start a file since I have Stadium and an N64. The introduction of the Red Randomizer just furthers the amount of things you can do, like adding pokemon from other generations. Too bad it doesnt add a whole lot of moves to the pool, maybe there isnt a lot of space to put new attacks into the rom, and they probably are harder to make than just the pokemon themselves.
Gen II I got to play only a couple years back, but it was definitely really solid. Of course, everyone brings up the fact of going back to Kanto, because thats always nice. And they never really told you about it either, until you got off the water and the guy says "Do you know what you just did?".
Gen III was another one that I really ended up liking. It was interesting to hear about the lore for Groudon, Kyogre and Rayquaza. But this is also the game where the quality of the new pokemon goes downhill. Its also where they started saying "Oh, there needs to be like 15 legendaries in every new game" and it completely ruined the impact that it had when you encountered one. It just meant that it was gonna be a pain in the butt to catch. I spent 2 whole weeks to catch Groudon, only for him to get caught in.....a Love Ball lmao.
Gen IV is where I ultimately hit the wall, and is about where I stop being a pokemon fan. Now before I say any of this, we are all entitled to our opinion, and I know that some of the newer games are peoples favorites. No disrespect to that, but my opinion of these games is........terrible. The pokemon feel closer to a chinese knock-off rather than real pokemon, and some of them are just downright awful. The storyline was bland and never once intrigued me. I tried pushing through, but it just kept getting worse as I went on.
From here out, I dont have an opinion because I havent played the games. I even tried to play OR/AS, but the new editions since the original GBA version made the game not feel fun at all. That, and I swear the health bars drop slower and slower every game. Its like I attack, then wait for 2 minutes while the health goes down pixel by pixel.
I really do enjoy the pokemon franchise, but the games nowadays are like a bad joke to me. When I see the new commercials, I just kind of chuckle. Did we get the infamous chair pokemon yet? We've got a lamp, so if we can get a chair, a table, and a dinner-plate, we could have the Dining Room Gym in the next game. Oh wait, we already have a dinner plate pokemon.
Its like how Paper Mario is nothing like it used to be, which in turn made the new ones terrible. I know its in the basic design to do something new for an installment of a game series, but removing key mechanics that make the game unique just makes the series fall dead. Now if I want to play Paper Mario, I play the Mario and Luigi games, because all the good parts of Paper Mario got thrown into those for some reason.
