Custom Item Subscreen Counters

I have scripted bombs in the quest that I'm working on.  Since I don't want any of the default bomb behavior, I've given them Custom Itemclass 01.  They still use the standard Bomb Ammunition Counter.

 

One of the options for a counter block in subscreens is "Only Selected", which means that the counter will only appear if you have the item selected.  As far as I can tell this is hard-coded with respect to what item classes are tied to which counters (e.g. bomb ammunition counters ONLY show up if a Bomb class item is equipped). Is there any way to get this to work with the above setup?

...it should use the counter set as the 'Use Counter' in the item editor.

The item uses the counter just fine, but the counter won't display in the subscreen even if I set the bomb item to use the bomb counter.
