I want to make a trigger that is in front of an NPC character, that can make a text box appear with a message string, and then dissapear.

Is there a way to do it without scripts?

Unfortunately, no, it's not a default game feature.

You could either use the Sign Post script that comes with classic.zh, or look at Moosh's NPC script(s) - there's a "simple" version that lets you place an FFC with variable D0 being the string to display, and that's it. Takes a little setup at first, and requires a solid combo under the NPC (unless you want to walk through it), but super easy to use once it's in.

The way it always used to work in 2.10 is you'd put a tile warp right in front of the NPC and warp to a screen with a guy and a text box. Then that second screen has a tile warp going back to the first on all the surrounding combos. There was no way to make it button triggered unfortunately. And of course scripts make it way more polished looking.
