edit: Would just like to say it astounds me that something that took two brain cells and five seconds to post has the most likes of any post on the site

It's not very romantic, but I tend to think of love as a mutual dependency. When two people need each other, and are comfortable enough in each other's company that they don't want to rip each other's throats out ...  Yeah, that's a big part of it. It's about two people supporting each other and providing for each other's shortcomings.

What love ISN'T is short term sexually-driven craziness and euphoria. That's just a biological mechanism to ensure our species reproduces. I believe love can exist completely independent of sex.

From what I learned, there are various types of love, love to a family member, love to a friend, love to an object (yes, there are people who have love for their objects like myself :P ). Either way, you as a human being can feel the difference between these types of love. The type that almost everybody brags about is like most have said, the need for a person whom to share feelings, thoughts, tongue kisses and support each other in the good and bad situations. That is real love, (as far as I know). Today's love is: "Baby I love you so much" and then after three days "We're over". Trust me, as a teenager, I have seen that many times. That's why I'm single :lol:

But my personal experience with love, it's hell on Earth man, you suffer for that one special person, can't stop thinking about him/her. But I believe those are the early stages, because if true love exists between 2 persons, you got nothing to worry about except be happy. But seriously, nowadays, it's rare to find true love. :/

I view the definiton of love as a belief and can mostly never be factually defined beyond showing affection to another person.

Or, if you're in a Dom/Sub relationship, it's more like:

"Baby please hurt me, please hurt me, some more"

"All love stories are frustration stories. As are all stories about parents and children, which are also love stories, in Freud’s view, the formative love stories. To fall in love is to be reminded of a frustration that you didn’t know you had (of one’s formative frustrations, and of one’s attempted self-cures for them); you wanted someone, you felt deprived of something, and then it seems to be there. And what is renewed in that experience is an intensity of frustration, and an intensity of satisfaction. It is as if, oddly, you were waiting for someone but you didn’t know who they were until they arrived. Whether or not you were aware that there was something missing in your life, you will be when you meet the person you want. What psychoanalysis will add to this love story is that the person you fall in love with really is the man or woman of your dreams; that you have dreamed them up before you met them; not out of nothing – nothing comes of nothing – but out of prior experience, both real and wished for. You recognize them with such certainty because you already, in a certain sense, know them; and because you have been quite literally expecting them, you feel as though you have known them for ever, and yet, at the same time, they are quite foreign to you. They are familiar foreign bodies. But one thing is very noticeable in this basic story; that however much you have been wanting and hoping and dreaming of meeting the person of your dreams, it is only when you meet them that you will start missing them. It seems that the presence of an object is required to make its absence felt (or to make the absence of something felt). A kind of longing may have preceded their arrival, but you have to meet in order to feel the full force of your frustration in their absence." - excerpt from 'On Missing Out' by Adam Phillips (an ingenious writer and Freudian psychoanalyst).

So, based upon that quote, I am kind of supporting the mate selcetion theroy of complimentary needs: both partners mutually seek to find in one another that which is lacking in themselves. And with that, I do not think that you could be in a fulfilling relationship with somebody who is essentially your mirror image: both of you are lacking the same thing and both of you cannot provide this thing for the other. As such, the two of you are unlikely to fall in love in the first place.

"What is love? 'tis not hereafter;

Present mirth hath present laughter;

What's to come is still unsure;

In delay there lies no plenty;

Then come kiss me, sweet and twenty,

Youth's a stuff will not endure."

--Feste (the clown) in a song in Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare

Actually, Shakespeare comments a lot on love. He could be useful to this discussion. Except that he's dead.
