Technically Four Swords could be lower, I never really played it fully. I might also consider ST higher then PH, but I kinda rushed lol.

But yeah, looks like Russ' predictions are right mostly. I tend to favor the 3D games these days more, and games that feel more "traditional".

I didn't really know where to put Hyrule Waitress either, but I though HW was kinda repetitive after a while.

To comment on mine now that I have some time.

The Oracles games are my favorites. I consider them mostly flawless. I like Ages more cause I think Seasons starts slow and Ages has a better story. Seasons makes up for it in its later dungeons and items.

Majora's Mask is my favorite 3D game, largely for its story.

I put 220 hours into Hyrule Warriors. I think it's fun af. I think it gets a bit crazy as you go into the DLC.

Breath of the Wild got about 60 hours from me. A nice sandbox, if not a bit too big.

Ocarina of Time is a good pure Zelda game, similar to the Oracles. I just like the Oracles and MM more.

A Link to the Past is really the originator of the formula. I don't care much for how magic works in it and a couple of dungeons.

Adventure of Link is really nice. I would love to play it with either no life system or a more lenient one. I do think the Thunder spell being required is flawed.

TriForce Heroes is really fun. The only real flaws for me are inherent to multiplayer games. Good fun.

Twilight Princess is nice and enjoyable. Wonderful dungeons. Don't care much for the art style.

A Link Between Worlds is also really fun. Fixed my issue with A Link to the Past. I'd probably put it higher but I have difficulty separating it from A Link to the Past.

Link's Awakening has nice dungeons and is solid at everything. Don't care for the required trading sequence or the sounds.

Four Swords Adventures is really fun. It's even fine single player. Certain levels have stupid expectations.

Wind Waker has good dungeons, great art and nice characters. I don't care for how big the ocean is or that it just feels a little incomplete.

Skyward Sword has a good dungeon, and good stories. It's really pretty. I do not like the overworld, even though I like the individual areas.

Minish Cap is really fun, possibly my favorite art and music. Dungeons are meh, and I think it's too short.

Legend of Zelda is good pure fun. I don't care for the obtuse secrets and level 6 is absurd. Especially if you don't have the Bow and Arrow.

Phantom Hourglass suffers from being good at nothing. It's average in every conceivable way.

Spirit Tracks is excellent, outside of wishing their was more exploration. I just absolutely despise the flute. Fluteless ST would jump up 2-3 tiers easy.

I have not played Four Swords.

Only putting the Zelda games I've actually playing. None are really 'bad' per sey, which is why I have 'C' as my lowest score.

Yeah, that's it.

I basically lived off the first 3 games all my life, until I finally tried Minish Cap a year ago.

It didn't play well, but looked (mostly) beautiful.

On the subject of Zelda 2, I'm surprised, but also somewhat satisfied, to see so many people ranking it either equal to or better than Zelda 1.

Somebody posted this comment on a Zelda 2 soundtrack video, which I think sums up a lot of points people seem to overlook when comparing the two:

"[My dad and I] were never exposed to the original Zelda as kids. When I got older, I discovered it via emulator, and it was a really cool game, but I felt like it was limited because the top-down view was all that was available. The fighting system seemed very limited compared to the side scrolling, jumping, ducking high-low sword/shield battles of Zelda II. There were no towns, no sense of community, no direction, just a barren wasteland you were supposed to sort out on your own. I did eventually grow to enjoy and respect it for the classic that it was. But when I tried to warm my dad up to it, he could not get into it. He watched me reveal and solve some of the game's great secrets and enjoyed it as a spectator but had no desire to start a series of his own. He actually loved Zelda II and had nothing for the original Legend of Zelda. And I sort of understood."

If you come to these first two games after playing later ones, you might not realize how much Zelda 2 added to the Hyrule experience.

Of course, by contrast to that comment, I did find the blocky visuals to be a notable downgrade, and with the expansion of gameplay tactics comes the expansion of sources of frustration (hello flying heads that wait until I jump over a lava pit to enter the screen and knock me in), but it's a game that provided significant expansion to everything in every regard, and there's plenty reasons for somebody to like it far more than the first.

my wild and crazy opinion is that a lot of zelda 2 -- the way it feels, the difficulty and adversity and sort of threatening nature of its enemies, the semi-tactical nature of it, the relative richness of the mechanics, the several towns loaded busy people -- influenced OoT and by extension the later 3D games super heavily and they wouldn't be what they are without Z2's influence.  i feel like you could legitimately make the claim that zelda 2 is the first 3D zelda, in a weird way (or maybe more accurately a proto-3D zelda)

it's a damn fine game y'all.  it doesn't follow in Z1's footsteps super directly but it still feels super fun to play

(also that comment is really good and i like it a lot)

A little explanation:

Skyward Sword (entirely ruined by forced, unwelcome, clunky motion control) and the original Gamecube version of Wind Waker I played, but didn't enjoy very much. If Wind Waker HD was on this list, it'd be higher up due to its additions and fixes, but the original version...no. It's an unfinished game, and Nintendo's stupid deadline policy at the time is the reason for that. Triforce pieces should have been in dungeons and not in random locations around the ocean. What's there was nice, but overall Wind Waker felt like I was being ripped off. Polish and detail has a precipitous falloff once you get past Dragon Roost.

I was also not the biggest Minish Cap fan. It didn't really let you venture off the linear path very much and there are sections that drag on too long.

Breath of the Wild is a good Ubisoft-style open-world game, but not a great Zelda game, which keeps it out of the top two tiers. The shrines are no substitute for actual dungeons and while the beasts are cool and all, they are also not dungeons. Weapons break a little bit faster than I'd like. The DLCs didn't add much, considering I'd already found every shrine and gone everywhere by the time they arrived...also, soooooo many loading screens. Also why would I want to collect all the Korok seeds if I can't use them all and literally get a chunk of poo as a reward for finding them all?!

I spent many hours of my life on the toilet playing the Oracle games. They're really solid games. The linked game mechanic was cool.

LttP stands on its own as the finest the series has to offer despite its short duration. Link's Awakening came extremely close to being as good, being essentially an adaptation of LttP (more or less) for Game Boy. The N64 games were real timesinks for me in the late nineties and early 2000s and are still terrific.

Link Between Worlds was forgettable enough for me that I don't want to put it in the list, and I've never played the DS games.

The original two NES games are definitely classics, but I really have to be in the right mood to play them. In some ways they haven't aged well, but they still hold a lot of nostalgia for me and I still love them. Four Swords Adventures I remember being pretty fun.

This. I've thought this too, and it makes a lot of sense. Z2's combat feels like what a 3D game is, minus the z axis and z targeting.
