Will there ever be a simple tool that allows people to convert old sfx.dat files to a format compatible with newer versions of Zelda Classic so that stuff like the Castle Haunt quests can be played with the correct sound effects in a version of Zelda Classic that is more compatible with modern versions of Windows?

Allegro Grabber is what you want. You can open the old sfx.dat file, and export the sounds from it, then load them into your quest.

You could also open the sfx.dat file that comes with any specific ZC version, and replace the sounds in it.

[...] Castle Haunt quests [...]

Here is an updated Castlehaunt and an updated Castlehaunt II, with the sfx.dat files embedded in the quest, saved in 2.53.

No other changes were made.

I used grabber to export the wav files, and I imported them into the quest, in place of the default sounds in the 2.5x quest format.

If Freedom is still around, he might want to update the database entry with this. Of course, I do not know if there are any 2.5x issues that may surface, playing these versions.

These will run in 2.53.0, 2.50.2, 2.50.1, and 2.50.0, with more possible bugs in descending order (older builds of ZC).

I'm not particularly interested in fixing all of the old quests with custom sfx.dat files, but if you have one or two specific quests that you want to play in 2.5x, other than Castlehaunt, and have trouble using Grabber, I may be willing to update a them for you.

Oh heck, I totally didn't realize you had done this for me. Thank you! (I forgot to turn on notifications for this topic)
