Equipment Durability viable? (BotW style)

So, I was wondering: is equipment durability as seen in BotW a viable concept for Zelda classic quests? Can it be implented with relative ease and would the ZC item editor/space allow for a larger collection of different weapons and items?

I am interested in what you think about it.

This is a great idea. I would start smaller and try to make the full collection of Skyward Sword Shields.

This would probably depend on the "paper-doll" thing I saw Zoria talking about once. Because the Link Tile Modifiers would be bonkers.

How would you show the durability? Kind of like how Minecraft does it? With a green / yellow / red bar along the bottom of the item button?

Oh, I wouldn't necessarily want to recreate all Zelda items. I would be satisfied with maybe three or four types of swords, shields, bows... As for the Link tile modifiers, I don't think those will be that important - I don't intend on having more than the typical blue and red tunics, maybe purple ones, though maybe with the added gameplay twist that they will wear out (pun intented!) eventually.

Yeah that is a good idea. I haven't put too much thought into this yet, so this is just the kind of feedback I am looking for. Any other ideas on how a durability system for a ZC quest with about Gameboy Zelda complexity might look like anybody? I'd love to hear more creative stuff.

What do the scripters think? Is this too ambitious? What about any implied inventory systems here (dropping items etc.)?

It would be doable, yes. It wouldn't exactly be easy though. Assuming multiple swords and whatnot... you'd basically need a custom subscreen and custom item system and... custom anything related to it really, that was tailored specifically to the quest. It wouldn't necessarily be super hard, but it'd be a whole lot of work. And of course, everyone has their own opinions and to each their own and all, but I can't imagine doing that much work to recreate such an unenjoyable system myself.

Well, a central part of a plot I am thinking about right now is a kind of "plague" that makes all items, weapons, amor brittle/easily breakable so a durability system would probably immersion of the game in the plot (vice versa). Plus, it would make Rupees infinitely more useful since you would actually have to buy stuff from time to time.

It's honestly not that different than Like-Likes in purpose, just more organic.

I'd recommend it.

But seriously, I do think Skyward Sword's shields are the minimum absolute version of this. Just vague it out a bit and this can apply to swords, tunics, bows and arrows independently, and shields.

L1 Item X, Property A, Graphic 1, 2, 3
L2 Item X, Property B, graphic 1, 2, 3
L3 Item X, Property C, graphic 1, 2, 3
L4 Item X, unbreakable


The reasoning behind this is... well, you know how in Twilight Princess you got the Ordon Shield. But if you burned it up, that's it. It was gone. You could by another wooden shield with the exact same properties, but its not the One-Time Only (I think) Ordon Shield.

The other question I have is... how would you approach the inventory space with this implemented?

Do you permanently assign items to buttons like Breath of the Wild? Do you keep lower level items?
At least this way you only ever need THREE spaces. You might have a wood shield and a metal shield, but maybe not two wood shields. Or they can stack, I suppose.

Either way, it also kind of steers the unforgiving (er, unenjoyable) Breath mechanics toward something closer to Ocarina with a higher risk of loss.

Rejuvenation Potions? Blacksmith Guy? I dunno. I'm spitballing.

It's possible, but quite a lot of work. It's also (IMO) an awful game mechanic, as implemented in BotW.

P.S. Don't bother unless you want to fully-script every collision, item use, inventory, and subscreens.

If you can only hold one of each weapon, and it breaks upon use and not just hitting? Fairly easy.

Pacifism doesn't suit Link, but it sure suits me in my bandana rolling around Hyrule on an ancient hog.
