Ok, new problem, the enemy is now breathing fire which is good, but it's only upwards. And it's only over one row of tiles, so it's breathing far enough.

 

That sounds like you're using the enemy in a sideview gravity screen. Gravity also affects the flames.

Yes I am. Sorry that forgot to mention that. The idea is to have the enemy shoot only left.

Some things just don't work well in sideview. If that's where the problem comes from, there's little you can do outside of scripting. Try using the same enemy in a non-sideview area and see how it works.
