I'm for the remakes, the games are still great fun and not everyone has a PS1, PS2 or PS3 console or an American Playstation Store account laying about to play the originals (aussie playstation store is missing a bunch of legacy games & games in general).
Of course there's emulation but that's kinda illegal/gray area and not everyone will be willing to set that up even if they're interested in the games. You have to get a BIOS and for PS1 games you'll be dealing with a lot of plugins & settings (just like you do with N64 emulation), PS2 emulation on the other hand is in a pretty good spot but again you need a BIOS to get started.
This also.
I can understand people not wanting to buy the same games again, better engines/graphics or not, which is fair. To say they shouldn't happen at all though is rather selfish, considering that not everyone had the chance to experience them when they were new and/or CAN experience them in their original form. As long as the remakes are actually quality, I welcome any of them.
Not that this game is one of them, but there are also several games that exist that have aged poorly and benefit greatly from a modern remake, like the gen 1 Pokemon games. Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen were perfect remakes and basically replace the originals; they are the definitive quality Kanto experience, and are easy to recommend to modern Pokemon fans who haven't experienced the Kanto story.
