Defiled Courage is my first publicly announced quest. It's pretty much the standard Zelda quest with collecting the Triforce Pieces. Yet instead of 9 dungeons, my plan is to have 17 dungeons (8 +8 + Final dungeon). As it is, I feel 9 dungeons aren't enough to get most of the items proper usage. One of my goals is to give a good amount of usage for each item where I can. In addition to that, there are some changes to the traditional Zelda formula.
While this is my first publicly announced quest, it's my third attempt at a quest and somewhat of a remake of the first quest. So what was my first attempt at a quest? It's pretty much what you see here. It had 7 levels and I was nearly starting on the work Level 8, but I had so many not-so-interesting areas to work on. So, I took a break and eventually hated how I had done a lot of things and basically cancelled it to started work on the second attempt.
My second attempt didn't get as far, but I do feel it gave me some idea how to make some quality work. Although I don't know how the public likes my quest. It had 1 level and a half. Level 1 was a forest themed dungeon in a way and the half level was ice based. What happened to this forest themed dungeon? Well, it didn't go to waste.
So now is the third attempt. Early on this time around, I knew I liked the first attempt's dungeons and wanted to remake them. All of the main dungeons in this quest were in the first attempt. But there were a lot of changes from the first attempt.
For one, a lot of gameplay changes were added in.
#1: The Bank: The bank was something I actually found while messing around with String Control Codes. It was originally meant to be that you had to go back to the Bank every time you got a full wallet to deposit or withdraw, but then came the Medallions and Charms. How did I find out how to do the Medallions and Charms? It was an accident. You know the Pickup Message Script? I put that in the wrong script tab, so instead of it playing a string when picked up, it did it as the Item's action.
#2: Item Drops: Oh look, same standard item drops. I don't know why, but the item drops always seemed so dull to me. You needed bombs? Oh look bomb drops! Need Rupees? Hey look, pots and grass! I wanted a different theme to the game so to say and after playing the fantastic Lost Isle, it gave me an idea to restrict the item drops. For instance in this quest, Enemies (in general) only drop Rupees. And Hearts? They're only in pots and grass. Potions? Yeah, I'm not going to be as harsh as LI was, but you now need Seeds to purchase them. Where do you get seeds? There are some all over the place. In all honesty, you probably won't get low on them unless you aren't very good with surviving.
#3: Heart Containers: Oh no what did I do with these? It's not as big as one would assume. But seeing how people love sidequests and finding secrets, I altered how these are gotten. Basically they are now hidden in dungeons and can be obtained after getting the Boss Key. Some require an extra key and sometimes some sort of gimmick.
Other than that, there are other new changes. But I feel this gives the general idea. One thing though that should be noted is that the story, as small and nonexistent as it seems now does indeed exist and was built to fit around the dungeons in this quest. Not the best idea, but better that then no story, right?
With that, I have stuff elsewhere to do. So I'll add some cool things in later like the development history of the dungeons and the basic ideas behind them.
The original pre-christmas post is below:
So here it is, Defiled Courage along with it's update: 1.2. This is the same quest that had a demo in the Fall Expo, but it's been modified to be quite a bit easier than 1.0. For those that liked the first version, I'll probably include a hard version in it's final release. As it is, I'm nowhere near done, but I have Level 6 and Level E available for those that have completed versions 1.0 or 1.1. There are also a lot of other small changes (including a new cave system and a few Heart Pieces were added), so it may be worth playing through from the start again. The bank system is pretty unchanged from 1.1, it is vastly faster at using the items than 1.0 still.
SCREENSHOTS (Same as the Expo topic, but I'll add new ones in later on after the holidays):
Credits and whatnot will be edited in later (there are a bunch listed in the Expo topic.)
In any case, I'll edit thiis later on to make it look better as well. I wanted to have this version to be a Pre-Christmas release so people could play it on and off during the holidays if they wanted.
With that out of the way, Beta 1.4 is located here - (SIDEWARP FIX + LEVEL E FIX - ) http://www.mediafire...m6bfmc6nxkbax7m
Please use 2.5 RC5 for this. It'll probably play fine in the 2.50 Final, but it hasn't been tested.
And with that, Merry Christmas!
