When you're making tiles that need to be replicated in different directions (e.g. mountains, wall sets), are you the type of fella to rotate the tiles accordingly? or the type of fella to horizontally/flip tiles when replicating them?

(note: having to rotate a tile 90 degrees and then flipping it does not necessarily make you a rotator, since you can't physically get that orientation with h/v flips alone)

An illustration of the problem at hand:

Left: rotator behavior (note each tile is rotated 90 degrees relative to the previous one)

Right: flipper behavior (one tile was made, which was horizontally and vertically flipped to make each of the other corners)

Rotate for borders, and dungeon walls, flip for non-border mountain corners is my general rule on it. I think in this case, the second one (flipped) looks better here for the mountains, but I'd personally paste the rotated borders over the flipped cliffs.

I've never made a mountain set, but for walls at least rotating is the correct decision. Otherwise you'll get weird stuff, like corner tiles where you can clearly see this unnatural kaleidoscope symmetry. It's noticeable and it looks very wrong.

"Unnatural kaleidoscope symmetry" is a great way to put it, and yeah you don't want to flip stuff that has a repeating pattern along turns, rotating will almost always be correct for that. Except, in weird cases like this, with the inside of corner mountains.

If you rotate these, you will get some oddities like this. Outside of making symmetrical objects, this is probably the only use-case for flipping when it comes to making 3x3/ 4x4/ etc... "pools" to draw from.

Rotator, because it's more often than not the only viable option. When I feel I can get away with it, I flip. Funny enough, the example in the first post is a case where neither option is viable. There you need to be a tile redrawer.

I think I might be OCD enough to just make a new tile and combo for something that wouldn't look right in either method.  What Anthus posted is more than enough justification for me to rethink any sudden laziness I might feel when doing combo page work.
