The trouble is, I've got more areas in my quest than I've got cool songs that fit the style. I'm hoping that you all might have some suggestions. I'm looking for fairly simple melodic songs. Midis for old tunes from the 8 or 16 bit era work well. The songs can be fast-paced and heroic, or slow and melancholy, but shouldn't be upbeat, happy or silly. I'd also like to stay away from easily recognizable songs from well known games - no Mega Man 2 Wily Stage 1, for example. In fact, it's probably best to avoid main series Mega Man, Mario or Zelda games. Side series are fine, but I'd really like to find some "hidden gems" that not everyone has heard. Extra points if they have that "nes feel."

Any suggestions? I really appreciate it. :)

I like to consider myself good at midi-hipstering. I'd be happy to send you some suggestions if you can send me screens and a description of the mood you're trying to achieve I wouldn't mind sending you some recommendations.

Well, there is this great NES game called Crystalis that isn't that big, but has some great tracks. I recommend Pyramid and Mt. Saber.

I love Crystalis! That reminds me, I need to go back and finish it ...

I'll check those out, thanks. :)

I'm afraid not. At least, none I'd be willing to share. Honestly, I work best when I have an area fully conceptualized, including the music. I know it's not a lot to go off of, but there's about six different areas, so there's a lot of different styles. Any suggestions might fit somewhere ...

I find that the Mario & Luigi RPG series has some excellent music.

Check out the music from the Dragon Quest series. One of my favorites is the first world map theme from 2.

These aren't "fairly simple melodic" songs, but hey:

Wow, those are some awesome midis, Legen Dary. Not sure I've got a place for them, but they sure are cool!

Thanks for the other suggestions. I'll take a better look at some of those later.
