All 8 Mega Man X games are coming to Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC! Tune in at http://twitch.tv/capcomunity for more details!

I'm interested in Megaman X4, X5 and especially X6. I've played the other games a lot (except X7, I beat that once and will never touch it again lol).

I completed X1-6 on the GameCube.

I never finished X7, got to probably the last boss, but alternated levels with my brother.

I tried to buy X8 once, but got the wrong game in the mail.

I love X4, but X5 is pretty bad and X6 is an unplayable frustrating nightmare headache.

Like I said, I finished X6, but don't think you could pay me to go through it again.

X1 is great, and X2-X3 are solid, though not as good as X1.

So, at long last, next year I will get to play the 2 Mega Man X games I've never played before....Mega Man X7 & X8. I was hoping for some kind of Mega Man X Collection (with all 8 games this time)....This will do.

Well, since it's Switch bound, I guess this is a good excuse to beat them all finally. I've only finished X1, and X8. I tried X2-4 but never beat them or even got very far.

I'm be getting this for sure. I have only beaten Mega Man X, and haven't really touched the others, but with all of them in one place, sounds good to me.

I love X2 to pieces and it is my favorite, indeed one of my favorite games ever. X1 and X3 are good too, X1 being the original and X3 being the most challenging, but somehow X2 gels better for me than either of those. But I mostly lost interest in the franchise after X3.

There's things that intrigue me about X4 but I don't quite like it. Maybe if the play abilities didn't feel more limited than X3, if the graphics weren't weird and rubbery and ugly, if the music was any good, if the stages were interesting, if they didn't have those stupid instant-death bike levels, then maybe I would like X4.

EDIT: Spoilery story mini-rant follows.

Spoiler

A game I enjoyed at least as much as X4 was Xtreme 2 for gameboy color, it's full of flaws and clunky stuff but it's got a cool unlockable mode where you switch between X and Zero on the fly. Xtreme 1 was alright, but less interesting overall.

Both gameboy games had dumb stories and bland presentation thereof and questionable translations, though, but honestly most X games don't interest me that much on the plot, even the SNES games. X4 is the strongest I've ever felt about one of these plots, for better AND worse (mostly worse).

X5 always seemed really janky and strange and I couldn't get into it, or even take it seriously for more than five minutes. Stop the electric space truck trap in the red hot jungle pursuit or the space colony will crash into the plot hole! Oh noes!!! The only point of interest that really sticks out to me about it, after watching a playthrough, is the thing right at the start where they remembered X's upgrades from the previous game- it always bothered me that his upgrades just sort of disappear with no explanation in other games (aside from the dash ability, but even then the leg design somehow reverted).

But it's been so long since I've actually tried playing X5 that I can't remember the gameplay too well. I know the armor-switching concept was kinda fun in principle, but I'm not sure if I liked the execution? I dunno. I had a lot of trouble staying interested.

I do like that X5 had a bit of a branching plot/multiple endings thing going on though. X4's story could've been much better if it had done something like that I think, part of what was so frustrating was having ti play as characters I disagreed with pursuing a path I already knew was wrong and stupid when, realistically speaking, they should have other options in-character. It's part of why I don't like Cecil from Final Fantasy IV, either, that guy sucks.

I haven't tried X6 at all but it sounds... questionable. Likewise X7 but in a very different way. I know very little about X8 but it's never caught my interest enough to investigate.

Heck, I haven't tried the Zero games, and those do sound maybe interesting.

I dunno, these might all be great games and if you love them, awesome. I do kinda like the original series' Megaman 7 and Rockman and Forte was fun even though it has that sorta rubbery squishy look too. (And The Wily Wars, and the NES and Gameboy games in general were okay.)

I am unlikely to purchase new videogames until I get more important living situation stuff under control, but when I do, it won't be these. *shrug* As far as rereleases I'm more interested in oens that add content, such as the Dragon Quest VIII rereleases with the extra party members, or Sonic 2 HD with Hidden Palace Zone or Sonic CD HD with Tails. (But I'd probably get Sonic Mania first.)

If you like the 3 SNES X games than I feel you'll enjoy X8 or at least find it adequate (there's 2 on-the-rails levels that most/all? people hate though). If you want a linear progression of upgrades and good difficulty progression and to see how the Ending changes each time, start on Easy Mode and work your way through the difficulties in-order (upgrades carry over).

For X8 I'd suggest you play in this order:

1st playthrough of the game (higher difficulties have tougher enemy AI and stronger/more varied attacks, including bosses):

Start on Easy: Some upgrades are available to find in the levels.

NG+ in to Normal: More upgrades are now available to find in the levels (you keep purchased upgrades from Easy playthrough).

NG+ in to Hard: all upgrades are now available to find in the levels (you keep purchased upgrades from easy & normal playthrough).

2nd playthrough of the game:

Start on Hard mode without any upgrades already obtained. All upgrades are available to find in the levels.

I have to strongly disagree on X4's story. I thought it worked really well.

X4 SPOILERS

I do agree with what you said about X5, and the first thing that stood out to me in that game is that X can duck ... that feels so stiff and unnatural when the whole series was about lining up your full height shot and sliding or dashing under bullets.

I have no opinion on the acting though, I wasn't objecting to that. Heck, I'm a person who genuinely likes Haydn Christensen as Anakin and William Shatner as Kirk (even though I think they sometimes had bad writing to work with), so I'm not very judgmental about actors. It has to reach "The Room" levels of clunkiness before I really call something bad acting.

In any case, I do think X4 is interesting, even if I didn't enjoy it, and I can certainly respect where you're coming from.

But...

More X4 SPOILERS

On an unrelated note my mind keeps filling in the title of this topic as "Megaman X Series Going Multi-Platinum" :P

A Platinum-Titanium-X alloy?

I've been thinking about Sailor Moon so much that I'm used to reading '-ite' gemstones as names, imagining Shitennou-style characters named things like Corbomite and Dolemite. And that thinking is starting to blur into these -ium metal groups, too. Mushy brain...

Spoiler

I can also see where you're coming from on favoring X4 specifically- I similarly have a much smoother time playing X2 than any other game in the series (X3 especially trips me up, it's quite difficult). Every part of X2 feels familiar and solid and consistent to me, but I think it's also the easiest/most forgiving one (except maybe the second Serges battle, I never was very good at that part and it often takes a few tries).

Incidentally, I apologize if I've been spewing kind of extreme opinions about this game. I don't think it's good form to feel that strongly about something I don't remember clearly enough, as my original reasoning might've been something I no longer agree with, or I might've misunderstood in the first place in some way I don't even remember.

Every once in a while I get sort of crotchety, then go back and think better of it. : ( But on the bright side it's a fun discussion and I think you've gotten me rethinking these biases, and that's a kind of debate I like to have! Any time both parties come away with mutual respect and new ideas, something good happened, in my book.

So all I really know it made me feel very strongly that way at the time and that I've been hesitant to return for so long largely due to that (contrasted with how much more I've replayed the first three games over the years). Though not having the physical game or a playstation (and not even an illegitimate copy!) doesn't help.

Some day I may give it another try myself. It probably doesn't take long to play, after all, or at least certainly not to try out.

...You can see how going from the original series straight to X4 made me think "Holy S***, the Mega Man series just got real!" and why it made such an impact on me.

Oh wow, absolutely! Though I think it also has a lot more dramatic meat to it than X1-X3. Those games had their dark moments (mostly X1) but it was kinda... a gentler kind of dark. And then suddenly wham, this story. I kind of respect it for that alone, I suppose, even though I've been kind of talking trash about how it made me feel- it made me feel something quite strong, after all! ^.^

So you are right, I do like things about it. Also, I think the character designs all look really cool, even if I complained about the graphical style.

But dang is it frustrating to try to put myself in the protagonists' shoes awesome giant robo-boots! I guess that's part of what I was trying to say about FFIV too (although in hindsight I think FFIV has a bit of a weak and illogical story in some other ways, probably more so than MMX4)- I didn't like playing Cecil a the beginning of the game (or certain other points of the game like when they first go to the moon) because I disagreed with what he was doing, so I couldn't really get into him as a character.

Any time I'm playing something and I want to yell at the character I'm playing, and the only course is to keep doing what they're doing, that's frustrating. It's sort of like being a Goa'uld host in Stargate SG-1, where they control your actions and you're aware of it watching the whole thing at a distance, powerless.

As for X8... maybe someday. I think I'd retry X4 first though, and it may be a while before I do that either. One thing at a time, I suppose. I should probably start by eating something other than a single package of poptarts today ^^'

I'm so mad about these spoilers, I thought you just shoot stuff, but wooooah was I wrong!

Kidding of course, but reading your guys' analysis of the story of X4 reminds me why I love games. There are so many ways to interpret stuff.
