Rambly, you are preachin' the good word. I love Johto and there are so many things about Gen 2 that are close to my heart. (Obviously that's the case or I wouldn't have purchased the rerelease.) Unfortunately, the postgame content isn't really one of those things?

The concept itself is great and I think, if they ever were to do something like that again, they could do it better now. Perhaps it's that my standards too high nowadays but, as you said, the whole Kanto region seems pretty lifeless. It's fun to explore and see how things have changed over time, but it feels very tacked onto the end.

I would be very interested in seeming them revisit this sort of concept, though. With the next main game title coming to the Switch in a few years, maybe we'll see something a bit more grand that we have on the 3DS.

I read up on how to get Celebi, I bought Silver during the time-window, but they also want you to buy one of the Ultra games too, which I don't plan on getting. What a load of garbage.

I was able to use my Celebi code on Moon version. Have you tried that?

So admittedly, I've had very little experience with actual Gen 2. I played HeartGold to death, but my only experience with the non-remake Johto games was a quick, starter-only run of Crystal to compare. Perhaps it's because the remakes fixed things, but I didn't find myself having any of the issues you guys described. The level curve seemed more or less fine to me, and I thought Kanto was pretty fun to explore. The gym battles were especially fun. I remember Gary/Blue in particular being really tough and a fun challenge. With all that said though, I do remember hearing that Kanto got a pretty big touch-up in the remakes compared to the original, so that could be why.

I can understand both sides, though I'm more on the side that Kanto was fun too.  It was a bit underwhelming to see all the trainers in the LV 30 range with Gym Leaders in 40s and 50s, when it should've been 50s and 60s with Blue cappign off in the 70s, for Red's 80s.

But other than that, exploring the region was fun.  I feel like people really only say it's "lifeless" because there's not another evil team to get caught up in while you're in the Kanto half.  It's literally just the adventure this time, with no distractions, and as such, you can focus on just exploring every nook and cranny.  Red already liberated Kanto from ROCKET GANG, so I'm not sure what people were actually expecting there to be a problem with in Kanto.

But you have to admit the novelty of it all is pretty great.  Seeing a familiar region 3 years later, that alone incentivizes you to visit any locations you remember, if at all, to see if the same facilities are present, and how they've evolved WITH COLOR  :).

Heartgold and Soulsilver fixed nothing with how Kanto is a barren wasteland. The only thing you can still only do in Kanto is beat the Gym leaders which only takes an hour or so to do so. After that there's absolutely nothing to do except for some very minor things. Doing an extremely quick sidequest with Steven which takes 5 minutes counts as new content?

You have this big region and you can add a bunch of stuff to do and yet they added next to nothing. That's why Kanto feels like a wasteland. And it's on a Nintendo DS cart and not on a Gameboy cart, so they didn't had any excuses this time.

The level curve is still terrible, requiring too much grinding just to keep your team at acceptable levels. Kanto regular trainers are still in their mid 30s to early 40s, did the developers expect any of these trainers to be challenging at all?  To make matters worse, it's a Gen 4 game which means extreme slowness.

The only thing i actually like in HGSS was the Pokeathlon and that was about it.

I also liked the Kanto part. I didn't play red/blue/yellow when they were new, Crystal was actually my first game, then I went back and got Gold. One of the biggest reasons I skipped gen 3 was because I heard that they removed past regions. I thought they would keep using the last two regions, but nope. It was such a good idea. They also rmeoved the day/ night system, and a few other things, iirc.

I do remember the leveling being kind of ass though, tbh. It was hard to find trainers, and the rate in which you can re-battle them wasn't high enough to compensate for the levels you'd need.

Oh cool, thanks! I got mine now, I must have skimmed too fast or been misinformed

EDIT: Also I just saw that you can still use codes to get Mega Stones until Oct 31, so I'm going to go do that now

So to anyone playing these again now.  Have you noticed just how slow the characters walk on the GB/C games without the running shoes or bike?   IT makes you appreciate teh modern commodities much more, lol.

I never actually had that problem with the old games for some reason. I felt the walking speed in the older games was faster than in the newer games.

Re: Kanto - I feel it is the best postgame we've had in the entire series still. By postgame, I mean anything exclusively held for after beating the league. There may not have been a lot to do and the Pokemon levels make zero sense, but it was still neat to go visit every place again. The other games in comparison had small areas, a few random legendaries, a few short events, a Battle facility of some sort (*cough* full of cheating AI *cough*) and that's about it for their postgames. No other generation has any postgame on par with Kanto in the slightest. (I keep wishing that the new games would try to match it, but they seem to ignore the postgame completely.)

So far I'm disappointed in the towns, they feel lacking in flavor and identity compared to R/B/Y. In the original games every town had a name based on a color, and each town also had a clear theme/landmark:

Viridian - Green/ (okay this town doesn't have much but it's the first town)

Pewter - Gray/Stone/Museum

Cerulean - Blue/Water/Nugget Bridge

Vermillion - Orange/Docks/S.S. Anne/Pokemon Fan Club

Celadon - Green/Trees/Shopping/Casino

Saffron - Yellow/Silph Corporate Building/Dojo

Fuchsia - Purple/Safari Zone

Cinnabar - Red/Island/Fire Creature Mansion/Fossil Restoration

I'm not saying every town needs to be color-themed, but R/S/E had clear themes like Mossdeep and Lilycove. I will admit I'm only one town past Ecruteak (Mahogany Town) but it really seems like only half the towns have a specific identity. Goldenrod stands out as does Ecruteak and the Sprout and Radio Towers, but most towns have felt small, empty, and without distinction.

EDIT: Okay Olivine and Cianwood are great

Beat the champ today, I have to say this game felt a lot shorter than R/B/Y, especially seemed like there were less big caves/mansions sidequests. I had trouble with the Elite 4 because my team was in its 30's when I arrived. I also had to wiki Rock Smash and Exp Share after the 8th gym because i didn't find them. A couple towns at the end were visually interesting, but I felt the detour to get the 8th badge could've have more to it. Still need to explore Kanto and get the legendaries. Overall I feel like this game wasn't as large or detailed as R/B/Y, but I guess there was a lot of focus on remixing stats for spec. defense and adding held items, day/night, and 2 new types, so I guess it was a large step for the game mechanics. I felt underwhelmed, but still glad I played it. I am curious about one thing though, I saw a train in a screenshot, and haven't seen it in game yet.

EDIT: My final team half-sucked, looking forward to building a better team on my next play through now that I know what types are king in Johto

EDIT: I relied heavily on Kadabra 'cause he's great offense, but Graveler wasn't as strong defensively as he is in other games. I really needed a Houndoom, my party lacked fire badly

EDIT: Beat the champ in 29:24

EDIT: Okay I do think it's a thrill to see Kanto in color, because I've worked on colorization projects of my own for R/B/Y. It's true that Kanto Pokemon are fairly low-leveled and your team can steamroll over them, but I think it's wise to take this as a chance to start a new team, so that Kanto battles are more interesting. Unless you want to enjoy being powerful.

Well, the only real objective left is catching the lightning and fire dogs. I have a good method for capturing them, the hard part is just seeing them for the first time to get them on the map. I read that since they are Lv40 you can put a Lv30-39 Pokemon in the lead and use a Max Repel, then just keep entering and exiting an area, looking in the grass each time until you find one of the dogs. That's how I found Suicune (whom I captured), but haven't been having any luck sighting the other two... :(

EDIT: Caught all the dogs and unown, now when the heck can I use these games with PokeBank???

As predicted, they announced a couple of weeks ago that Pokémon Crystal will be coming to the Virtual Console, along with an in-game Celebi event.

Dammit, Nintendo. You know how to play me like a fiddle.

Let's hope it doesn't take them another two months after release to make Crystal PokeBank compatible.
