Oh my goodness, you have such a great taste in music! That's almost as if I posted it. :)

I like all genres, but as a lover of classical and metal music, symphonic metal is the best for me. My favorite bands being Nightwish and Epica. I'd also like to add to that list some awesome metal bands like Amorphis, Battle Beast, Beast in Black and Eternal Tears of Sorrow.

Nice to know that there's at least a few other people hear who know about this subgenre of metal. I personally found out about many of these bands from things like iTunes and YouTube recommendations. The website Metal Storm and their Top 100 lists also really helped with finding some bands that I otherwise would have never heard about. I always like new things to listen to when working on ZC quests and writing projects.

Strangely enough this year I have barely bought any new albums as compared to some previous years where I have bought around a dozen or so. It could partly be due to a lack of albums that interest me enough to outright buy them and also partly due to the fact that coronvirus for a while made it that I couldn't go out shopping at places I normally would have bought albums physically on CD, like the mall and thrift stores.

For new albums, I think the biggest highlight for me this year thus far was Nightwish's Human Nature. I actually did a whole Nightwish marathon following up to its release. I really liked the first disc, though I didn't particularly care that much for the strictly orchestral second disc. Not that I'm turned off by that kind of music, but most of the tracks didn't stand out to me as having any distinctly memorable moments to them.

I didn't mind the second disc, but I expected more from it. There are some really good parts, but overall it is quite meh. The first disc however is pure gold. It sounds new and fresh but there's still that familiar Nightwish sound. Can't wait to hear the new songs live at some point.

Being a Finnish metal fan, sometimes I feel a little spoiled with so many amazing metal bands coming from Finland... :)

Been slowly working through Mike Oldfield's albums.

Currently on Five Miles Out. Most of them have been pretty decent so far, but the best couple imo (so far) are still the original Tubular Bells and Platinum, minus the pop version of I Got Rhythm (which is kind of loose on the rhythm. Not, like, unrhythmic, but a bit slow for the rhythm to really be anything notable. Kind of doesn't do anything for the song, ya know?).

Can I bump this thread, well too late, I'm doing it anyway. Just felt in the mood to talk about music and of the related threads I dug up, this felt like the best one?

For the longest time, my favorite band was MxPx. Was introduced to them through my brother and liked their sound a lot. Nowadays, I definitely think if you'd shown me them today I'd be like "this corny shit is cringe as fuck, take it away," but I still have a nostalgic attachment to the band and acknowledge there's way better music. I also haven't been religious in a long time, so some of their religious themes early on make me roll my eyes. Thankfully, they too eventually moved away from religion, but sadly, their later music largely isn't as enjoyable to me as the older.

Most of the other music in that preteen/teenage era of my life I have no intentions of revisiting. Christian bands, largely. I was somewhat selective, as even back then I tended to think that most Christian music was awful. Just also found the ones I liked enough to not risk my mother's ire if she overheard some secular lyric and took offense.

Not to say some didn't sneak through. Yellowcard is the standout here... and possibly my actual favorite band nowadays. Pop punk band, their hook being use of a violin. And it works! I also learned of them through my brother, listening to their Ocean Avenue album (and the only one anyone remembers, if they remember anything beyond the title track). Later I'd get around to their followup album, and their actual best album, Lights and Sounds.

I also got into Dead Kennedys... which I also hid from my mom. At the time, I did the thing where I ignore the politics in favor of enjoying the good music, but nowadays I'm like "nah they were right the whole time."

Then at some point Amber introduced me to The Megas and I fell in love. Basically, Mega Man covers with lyrics that tell a story. What? The Protomen? Never heard of 'em. Actually I did hear their albums courtesy of a road trip with a friend, but haven't gone back to listen to them for myself yet. So far, The Megas has albums dedicated to 2 and 3, an EP dedicated to the first, a few scattered songs from other games on other EPs, and even Castlevania-based songs which really had me excited as well. Very eager to see what's next.

And that's about it for a while, my only real involvement with music being songs I liked from the likes of the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series and Guitar Hero, as well as the radio. Honestly it wasn't until last year, in July, that I finally started listening to music. I was planning a thirteen-hour road trip to Rhode Island (unrelated to the above road trip) and knew I needed to make the drive bearable, so I finally got a Spotify account. I loaded up several albums, from the Yellowcard albums I missed, to recommendations from people I knew, to a silly idea like "hey why not throw the album that Safety Dance came from on there?"

... so Men Without Hats is one of my favorite bands now. I wasn't expecting that album to fucking slap. It wasn't long after I ended up going through their entire discography. I wouldn't call them revolutionary or anything, but I like their sound a lot. It doesn't always hit; there are four albums I'd consider good, two I'd consider okay, one that's not really good, and one that's fucking awful... Have you ever heard a synthpop band pivot to grunge for one album? Don't. I respect the intention behind it, apparently the lead singer was jamming with some other artists and wanted to try something different instead of feeling constantly pressured to make "the next Safety Dance," it just... didn't result in anything worth listening to, sadly.

Back to Yellowcard, I actually threw on the rest of their discography for said trip, and came away with even more new favorite songs. Paper Walls is easily their second-best album, and When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes has a lot of songs I love. Past that, the albums are a lot more hit and miss, though a few of my favorite songs exist on those albums. And to be fair, basically album has at least one song I'm not that big a fan of, but that's practically every band, isn't it?

As for another new favorite band whose discography I'm currently working on: Less Than Jake. Knew of them largely from their appearances in Tony Hawk games. Thought of them as ska for the longest time... until I actually started listening to them. They are very definitely not ska and instead punk with sax and trombone. Which suits me just well, as punk is probably my favorite genre (pop punk included). They have a fantastic sound and a lot of their lyrics just feel very genuine. Definitely up there as one of my top favorite bands. Actually listening to one of the albums I haven't heard with as I type this.

There's also a couple more recent bands I've gotten into courtesy of a friend mentioning them on social media: Origami Angel and Super American, both pop punk/emo bands. They only have a couple albums out, but they're really fun to listen to and have gone pretty high up there on my list already. Another band I remembered from Tony Hawk and went back to is The Explosion, who sadly only had three albums, but they're a punk band I vibed with off the bat and I love their first two albums; their third is kinda so-so but there's a couple off that I love. I've also been getting into Bad Religion, on the topic of punk, though I've only heard two of their albums; ditto for The Offspring, although I'm only one album into them so far.

I'm sure my tastes will only continue to grow from here, as I'm always looking for new music to enjoy and put on my playlist for better variety. That's not mentioning the other music in my playlist from the likes of Rush, Haken, Dua Lipa, CHVRCHES, Pat Benatar, Cyndi Lauper, Nena, Incubus, Streetlight Manifesto, Baltimora, The Get Up Kids, Tears For Fears, Depeche Mode, and, heh, Scatman John. The above are the bands I felt most strongly about.

And why not end off with some samples of a few... These are not necessarily my favorite songs of each band, but they're at least up there. I was at first like "I will not voluntarily subject people to MxPx" but then I thought "eh, let people judge for themselves."

Yellowcard - Afraid
The Megas - Harder Than Steel
Origami Angel - Tom Holland Oates
Super American - butter
The Explosion - Atrocity
Bad Religion - Generator
