I've seen people do escape sequences in Zelda classic and was wondering how that was set up

You have to either put a time warp on every screen or use a script to make time warps carry over between screens. The time warp usually leads to a screen filled with spikes with a layer of black over it.

If you use scripts, you only have to set it up once, and the transition would be smoother. But using time warps takes less expertise to set up.

If you want a timer that is visible and spans multiple screens, you will need a script. I saw one once on the AGN forums, but it might not still be there.

OBJECTION!
Ok. So this hasn't been tested yet, but I have an idea: You could have cycling combos on a layer and have them cycle to a damage combo. The combos would reset animation when cycled to, but not when changing screens. You could have a similar combo that acts as a timer in one of the corners of each screen.

Never mind. Tried it and failed...
