I'll admit, I'm very much in two minds about the upcoming animated Mario film. It seems that for every part that looks good or catches my eye, something else shows up that turns me off a little. I am also very much aware of the general current saturation of nostalgia being used as a gimmick or hook to try and get longtime fans of things to see new films and series or play new games. I get it, I really do.
I must also admit that the recent 'SMB Plumbing' trailer/promotion for the SMB Movie gave me a laugh. Yes, the use of the SMB Super Show theme is clearly an example of the aforementioned 'nostalgia gimmick', but I like how the whole thing looks like an in-universe low-budget commercial for the brothers' business, especially the woman clearly reading from a cue card.
So, congratulations, Illumination. No matter how the film itself turns out, that one trailer gave me a good giggle.
