Somehow dipping into that water does not look like a good idea...

Last week you saw a classic screen, this week you see an ever more classic screen!

It's quiet... too quiet... What mysteries are hidden behind the walls of this abandoned structure? How is this castle related to the Temples and Sanctums about the overworld? Who were the Skkyna? And the most important question... what secret did their most prized possession hold?

This is a darn fine week for screenshots.

Orithan:  For some bizarre reason, I am constantly caught up in the fact that the corners of those land-meets-water tiles have a bit of the same color in the corner where the water should be.  The same applies to cliffs that meet the water, but have land in the corner of the tile instead of water.  I know that it's just a feature of the tileset, but to me, it feels like the tileset is being lazy.  Then again, I've used the EZGBA set before and the first thing I did was make a transparent version of all of the corners so I could plop them down on a more appropriately colored combo on a layer.  I have clearly completely defied the objective of the "EZ" in EZGBA. :P

Joel:  This screenshot reminded me of the difference between before and after shaving.

Spoiler

klop:  I love a bit of chaos in the screen, but controlled chaos.  I like to have a lot of varied things to look at on the screen at the same time, but I also don't like my eye to be swept away in that sea of variation.  This screenshot really does it for me.  Kudos.  You have acquired my vote.

Demonlink:  Now this is a beautiful screenshot.  It looks simplistic at first, but the closer you look at it, the more you realize that every single thing has a purpose.  It wastes nothing but accomplishes everything.  Phenomenal!

This always gets to me too, which is weird because I love the GBC set and never noticed it in the actual games. I guess I can't complain too much since I've never even finished a damn quest.

Orithan: Yeah, aside from the previous comment, I like this screen a lot. Very good use of the tileset. I've never particularly liked those water trees, but that's not really your fault either.

Joelmacool: I actually really like this. I don't know how you managed to be more minimalistic than the classic set, but you did, and it's cool. Gives off a very light-hearted, fun vibe.

klop422: This is amazing, though I'm definitely getting more mountain vibes than cave vibes. Maybe that's just because I'm used to seeing those tiles used as mountains.

Demonlink: I don't know if you were going for an authentic GBC vibe, but you pulled it off. It definitely feels like something you'd walk into in one of the Oracle games, even with the different subscreen.

All great shots this week. I'm gonna have to give my vote to klop422 though; totally digging the unconventional vibes.

edit: remind me to stop saying "vibe" so much

Orithan: Nice. This definitely feels like a poisoned/cursed area. Those two shallow water tiles are curious, but I'm sure there's a reason for them. :)

Joelmacool: I can't wait for the inevitable über classic screen that's just one plane of solid color.

klop422: I really like the design of this screen (preview of the boss rather than facing it without warning) as well as the subtle details across the screen. Voted here.

Demonlink: Good job making the screen feel bigger than it is. No real complaints from me other than that I don't think the screen is particularly special.

Personally as a Gameboy designer/perfectionist, I'm more peeved when people make borders transparent. It goes against the actual aesthetic of the entire tileset. Just go use Pure or Newfirst at this rate. :P

Anyways I voted Demonlink, mostly cause of the palette edging out the other screens which are just as great.

I voted for Demonlink.  The pallette was very appealing to my eyes and just barely won over.  Orithan's is my close second.  :)

This one was between Joel and Klop for me. I ended up going with Joel's cause it was the most interesting, but all the entries were good :).

I'm a sucker for original graphics, and weird shit lol.
