According to the Super Mario Brothers 3 video, it cost $800K to make the game.  Where does the money come from to pay the adults with real jobs when they are working on the game?  Does it come from the kids who ultimately enjoy the game?

It was easier to borrow money from the bank in Japan in the latter half of the '80s by monetary easing.

DarkFlameSheep - no it comes from the pockets of rich business people who risk $800K collectively in hopes of making a huge profit when the game sells.  If the game doesn't sell then $800K is gone.  No bank is going to lend money like that without equity being involved.

I own a copy of the original Zelda ROM and the original Zelda 2 ROM that can be played on a NES.  On the back on the box where the ROM is stored is promotional material designed to sell the game to a potential buyer.  Its very interesting to see how Zelda was marketed back in the late 80's.  See this on the back of the original Zelda ROM:

The Legend of Zelda - Experience the challenge of endless adventure.  The Legend of Zelda is the most challenging video game we've ever created. To help you keep up with the action, Zelda comes action-packed with maps of hyrule and extended playing power (save system).

See this on the back of the Zelda 2 ROM:

The Adventure of Link.  The Hyrule fantasy continues.  Are you up to the challenge?  In the tradition of the Legend of Zelda, the Adventure of Link is one of the most challenging video games we've ever created.

Sounds to me like Shigeru Miyamoto had always envisioned Zelda to be a type B game.
