If you are familiar with testing for Zelda Classic, then you can safely ignore this topic. This topic is here for those of you who do not know what beta testing involves. I thought it'd be appropriate to post this since beta 6 has already been spread around here. icon_shrug.gif

Most of you are familiar with the fairly tame public betas like 1.92 beta build 182. The builds that are currently being released for 2.11 to the public are an entirely different beast since a lot of the stuff in them is not tested ahead of time. With that said, you should keep these things in mind if you wish to take the risk of trying them:
  • There will be bugs.
  • There will be new features that might appear and disappear at whim.
  • There will be bugs.
  • You should report bugs you find to the appropriate forum at Armageddon Games. Posting bug reports here won't help much and would be fairly confusing without a dedicated forum.
  • There will be bugs.
  • PureZC will probably not support quests and tilesets made with these betas. It's too difficult to keep up with all of these versions on the database, thus we will probably be waiting until the full version is released.
  • Similarly, there is a chance you might lose your work when using betas. It's a risk that you are taking if you try them. Keep backups of your quests!
  • Did I mention there will be bugs?
I'm not trying to scare you away from trying the betas. I'm just making you aware that there is a risk, since I know that most of the PureZC quest community is not familiar with beta testing ZC in the true sense and might blindly upgrade to every beta released, ending up in a rut if something goes wrong. To sum this up:

Keep backups of your quests!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask in this thread and we'll try to answer them.

Hear hear! I work for a software company that gave its more experienced users Betas of our latest software, and sure enough some people didn't back up their work first, then whinged, even though we all told them to. They won't have that privelege next time. Any information created on a Beta version has the right to be removed from history.

Yes, ZC betas shouldn't be used to build quests. Instead they should be used to test the new features and to find bugs to help jman and Dark Nation to make a stable and bugfree Zelda Classic. icon_smile.gif

Uh, any topic that is pinned is exempt from the gravedigging rule. Just sayin.

Anyway, since this seems to have been turned into a small discussion...
I techncially AM building my quest in 2.11, but I have about 4 backups on my laptop and 2 on my main computer... So I'm safe. Nothing has gone wrong so far, so... Yay. I haven't really implemented any of the new features yet, either.

But still. If you are planning on building your quest...

BACK IT UP FOR THE SAKE OF BAGELZ.

If your quest is lost, it is not the dev's responisbility.

Zacron, please don't rent-a-mod. if there's a problem, we mods will find it and deal with it, alright?

Petoe: Yes, well... there hasn't been a real TRUE stable release w/o "beta" in the name. Unless, the last beta of a version is considered that full version. icon_blink.gif

Well, bugs are very minor nowadays, so not much to worry about. icon_smile.gif

I am going to add on to this. People have been asking me about if ZC Launcher will be released for 2.11. Yes it will be but not until ZC 2.11 Final is ready to be released. Until then. I will not be making a release for that build yet.

Well, you all forget... while yes, it might not be the best way to make quests, you have to consider one thing...

How else would new features be tested if quests weren't made in the betas? icon_blah.gif

Well, IMHO, the best way to get to know the features is to play with them yourself. icon_wink.gif How else can you get to know what everyone else knows? icon_razz.gif "n00b quests" usually don't work right the first time around, but at least you'll know what all the new features are before you get started on your real quest! icon_smile.gif

Since I have to download Zelda Classic for the third time (computer issues icon_sweat.gif ), is 2.11 ok now or is it still full of bugs? And where can I find it? Google is failing me.

The following versions are stable*:

2.11 b 10
2.11 b 16c
2.11 Build 254

*stable means that there are no game-stopping or program-crashing bugs. Only some inconsistencies, unimplemented features, and other minor annoyances.

I'll have to check those out. The one that I found and downloaded randomly closes on me. Thanks.
