Even if Rian didn't come in and decapitate JJ's plot threats in Episode 8, this trilogy was doomed from the start.

Spoiler

Additionally, the humor was pretty bad (looking at you, Poe's "yo momma" joke in Episode Eight).

I actually enjoyed Episode 8 on its own, but it doesn't help form a cohesive trilogy and although I liked Episode 7, it also fails narratively due to the reasons I gave.

It's a shame too, because I really like John Boyega, Daisey Ridley, and Oscar Issac. They just... weren't working with anything interesting, honestly.

So it makes sense Episode 9 was a tirefire patchwork, at least imo. Definitely my least favorite of the new trilogy.

It didn't have to be, though. With a single ounce of creativity, they could have followed up on the events of The Last Jedi in a more natural and satisfying way. Hell, my hopes were always that we'd see the First Order splintered, one side following Kylo Ren, the other Hux, since the two have been at odds since the beginning of the trilogy and Hux is clearly none-too-thrilled with Kylo as Supreme Leader. Would also provide the Resistance the perfect setup to capitalize in the middle. The Last Jedi set up Kylo Ren to be the true final boss and that's what they should have stuck with.

This movie overreached. It was focused on tying together the entire saga when it should have just focused on tying up this trilogy. I still plan on seeing it again, with some notes of things to look out for the second time around, but the more I think on this film, the more disappointed I end up feeling.

My thoughts exactly, at this point. Maybe they would have had to split it into two films? I don't know. It would have likely been better than what we got.

It honestly might have been better off as two films, if not longer. There's rumors flying around that it was longer and it was cut down via executive meddling for whatever reasons. Whether or not they're true, who knows. Rumors always exist and the bigger the franchise, the higher in number they are. Especially in one as "controversial" as Star Wars nowadays. Personally I wouldn't mind the rumor about the "extended cut" being released in theaters... well, I'd mind to the extent that they never should've cut it in the first place, but I'd also like them to admit they fucked up and release a better cut. I'd still have fundamental issues with the plot, but if they could at least solve the pacing issues, I'd appreciate it.

The one rumor I don't buy is that the original cut was three hours long and Disney wanted a shorter cut to make more money. Endgame is the highest-grossing film of all time and was three hours. That's stupid thinking.

I've even heard that there are as many as four different cuts of the movie, done by different people. To be honest, I don't actually think any of these 'cuts' are anything other than storyboards and idea-paths they ultimately didn't go down, because... well, given how different some of these cuts are said to be, why would Disney spend all that money to make four different movies and then only give us one? I don't know, it just sounds shifty.

A lot of the rumors about the JJ cut in general sound shifty, but one idea I've seen people mention is that it could be that Disney is actually putting some leaks out there intentionally to perhaps get people excited for an extended cut of the movie, similarly to how they've done it with the latest Marvel movies. Batman V Superman also had a director's cut that Warner Bros tried to push out as some sort of better version, but ultimately it only had a couple of extra scenes and was basically the same exact movie. Meaning the Ultimate cut likely didn't make the movie that much better in the eyes of people who didn't already like it.

What I'm getting at here is that I do think Disney might release another cut of the movie but if they do then I do not expect it will give us anything other than a couple of extra scenes that in no way will be able to rescue this film from being remembered as one of the worst Star Wars movies ever made.

That said, whatever happened to Matt Smith's character? Seems like having him on board was a big deal but he's not even in the movie as it is right now. Maybe that hints at a larger, more different version of the movie actually having been filmed, because I am pretty sure he did film some stuff, though I may be remembering that wrong.

Just wanted to say... this movie fucking sucks ass and balls. TFA sucked, TLJ was at least refreshing despite it dumping on the story, but this one... holy shit, what a fucking wreck. Pure garbage.

Fucking morons at Disney buying the property without realising it'd already run its course. There was nothing left to do with the Empire or Skywalkers - they NEEDED to branch out and do something new... but they didn't pay all that money not to cash in on nostalgia!

I was initially excited that Star Wars was coming back, but they fucked it all up. Every, motherfucking, step if the way.

Except The Mandalorian. That was ok. Not great, but a definite step in the right direction.

Still haven't watched Rise of Skywalker for myself yet, but I already know that its a train wreck based on all the spoilers I read. As for season 1 of the Mandalorian, I actually did finish watching it not too long ago and I agree that it is the best Star Wars thing that Disney has put out thus far. Really the closest they have come to capturing the gritty vibes of the original Star Wars trilogy.

"STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER" SUPER OFFICIAL SPOILER FREE REVIEW

It was pretty bad.  I guess if there's ever an "Abrams Cut" one day maybe it'll be better since it's kinda obvious it was cut all to pieces, but I doubt it.
