I'm trying to make an underground portion for a dungeon in a side-scrolling style (a la the Game Boy Zelda games), and I intended for there to be ladders the player must climb up. However, I can't seem to piece together a way for the tiles to behave as climbable ladders, I simply just fall straight down. I know the original Zelda 1 simulated the horizontal corridors and rooms by making only certain tiles walkable, but for what I intend to do this won't work. How would I make a tile act as a ladder, allowing for vertical movement without the Roc's Feather, or is it even possible?

What version of ZC are you using? This is important information for many questions like this.

If you are using a version older than 2.55, there is no way to do this aside from scripting. In 2.55, there is a sideview ladder flag that can be placed.

Grayswandir Sideview Engine.

If you're looking to use scripting, that is certainly an option. Not everyone wants to set up scripts though, which is why 2.55 implements ladders natively.

I use 2.53 since the instability of 2.55 makes me not comfortable using it. I'll have to work on making a script for it when I get home, then.

There are scripts available, including the one Alucard mentioned; though frankly 2.55 is more stable than 2.53 for the most part. (Some alphas are less stable than others, but, if anything unstable happens we usually fix it immediately, so as long as you keep backups whenever you change versions you'll be fine)

Well, I'll have to check it out for myself when I get home.

To follow on Emily's comment, I've never experienced one crash or anything from 2.55. A few little bugs, yes, but it's not a problem compared to what you get.

Unfortunately the ladder attribute for custom combos in 2.55 is the wrong kind of ladder attribute. I want a ladder that can be climbed in sideview gravity, not a tile that needs the ladder item to cross.

?? You aren't looking at the right thing at all. I mentioned this:

In 2.55, there is a sideview ladder flag that can be placed.

Whatever you're looking at does not sound like the placable flags menu...
