Couldn't you make the heart sprite a bar like thing, and then it will decrease as you lose life?

The quest is actually based on an RPG called Dragon Warrior (or dragon quest in Japan) I'm ripping the tiles from the Japanese Super Famicom (Nintendo) remake of DQ 1
