I joined the forum pretty much specifically for 1 reason.  I have a hard time sleeping, and I seem to fall asleep easier when I have youtube on.  I like to watch a channel of a guy "melee wizard" because he does zelda classic playthroughs and he narrates what he is doing.  I don't actually have time to play, or get good at these games.  I absolutely love the fact that many of the quest makers use music from older games (I recognize many of the 8-bit and 16 bit stuff as I am in my younger 40s).  I prefer to listen to videogame music over "real music" and I don't recognize where many of these songs are coming from.  Is there a listing somewhere?

There's no master listing, but if you post the quest you have in mind, we may be able to tell you what games the songs it uses are fro.

Well- "the forbidden city" had a screenshot at the end after melee wizard beat the game showing where it's music was from.  I paused the video and wrote them all down =)

I was able to find the full OST's for these games selected on youtube (many I had not previously heard of).  It was like striking gold...

Here are the quests that I would love to know what games the choices are from (This is all stuff I watched on meleewizards channel)

  • Temples of turmoil
  •  Hyrule's Resurrection
  • Legend Has It
  • Royaldarkness (Remastered)
  • Passage through time

Sometimes I get lucky on youtube and someone posted a comment asking/answering what songs are.  Some of these quests are really long and they take a while for me to get through.

I have so much respect for the makers of these games.  I understand how much time it takes to do something like this.  I want to thank you all for having a community like this.

No clue about any quest soundtracks, though if you want some good video game music, I'd check out Octopath Traveler's soundtrack; it's available as an album on Spotify, and probably findable in other places.

I forget how old these quests are, but if they're using enhanced music, it's just a matter of downloading the quests and looking at those tracks.

On the other hand, if it's MIDI, I'm not sure I can help (at least at the moment)

Glad you enjoyed the soundtrack of Forbidden City.

Here is what I can remember of Hyrule's Resurrection, in random order:

Castlevania 2 - Simon's Quest

Castlevania 4

Final Fantasy 6

Final Fantasy 7

Final Fantasy - Mystic Quest

Super Metroid

Actraiser

Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Duck Tales

The Addams Family: Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt

Battle of Olympus

Star Fox

Zelda 3

Ocarina of Time

Faxanadu

Battletoads & Double Dragon

Megaman X

Live a Live

F-Zero

Super Mario World

All of these soundtracks are worth checking out. That's not all of it, but I don't remember where the other tracks came from. There are also midi versions of two non video game songs, Orion by Metallica and Holy Wars by Megadeth.

Great - I found them for hyrules resurrection I had some of these, but some of them were new to me.  Thank you so much.  I will continue to search for the other quests...  I messaged the maker of "passage through time" hopefully he will respond.  I have the music from the night scene going through my head almost constantly =)

You sound like me. I'm 38, kids, job, etc. I mostly work to let's plays and videogame OSTs. In some sense, you are asking what soundtracks are good that you may not have heard of... I think. So, here are some of my favorites that either came from this community of otherwise:

Terranigma

Legend of Dragoon

Seiken Densetsu 3

Secret of Evermore

Romancing Saga

Suikoden

Valkyrie Profile

Golden Sun

Fez (doesn't really fir but anything by disasterpiece is amazing for working)

Baldur's Gate

Aer

Mother/Earthbound

Journey

Rime

Tactics Ogre

There are of course final fantasy soundtracks (9 is my fav), zelda (windwaker and between worlds milk bar songs are my favs), chrono trigger/cross and of course anything dragon quest.

I may have stumbled across more, but these are my go to's and I cycle through them every few weeks. Happy listening,

Thank you for your suggestions, although I prefer the 16 bit and 8 bit sounds over some of the newer stuff I downloaded everything you suggested and I will give it a chance.  I had some of these, but not Terranigma which impressed me the most (of the ones I didn't know)

I've so far been able to reach one of the quest authors and he was very helpful providing me with his music sources.

I still need to find:

  • Temples of turmoil
  • Legend Has It
  • Royaldarkness (Remastered)

For a lot of older quests, you can open them in Zelda Classic and navigate to Misc->Quest Midi Info... This will let you download the midis themselves provided they're not save protected, but more importantly you can also see the midi metadata which often includes either the source game or an author which you can sometimes trace it back to. Sometimes you're not so lucky and the midi just has instrument listings, though.

I was trying to see if anyone knew what tracks AtrusW0nder used in "myst isle".  I tried messaging him, hopefully he will respond but he has not been online in some time.
