Today I made some disturbing findings about the legality of the sword in the original Legend of Zelda (1986) title screen.

This may look normal - but to a trained eye, the problem is obvious. According to the official US Fencing rulebook, the maximum dimensions of the saber are as shown below:

If we assume a grip length of 17cm, then we can calculate the overall length using a ratio of the pixels of each:

This is a full 6cm longer than is legal. Unfortunately, I have to disqualify Link for this blatant disregard of sportsmanship and process.

It's a rapier, rather than a modern sports fencing sword.

It looks pretty average (if not a little bit short) for a rapier comparatively though, in fact you can get them longer than that. Real life historical swords are usually way bigger than you expect them to be.

Why assume the grip is 17 cm? If it's 15 cm, that makes the blade just 83.18 cm.

That's really weird..

Yeah i always thought that sword was out of place for Zelda Nes.

None of Link's swords are as slim and have a curved handle like that.

It kinda makes me think of a pirate sword a bit.

That's good but it's Too small xD

Make the White Sword or Magic Sword Go across the screen, in place of the NES one and make it look bigger for the Logo

That's pretty neat, actually.

Although I do like Jamian's version because of how hilariously small the sword is! XD

Nah, not a rapier. Rapiers were double-edged and had complex hilts. This is some kind of straight sabre or backsword - probably the latter due to the lack of a backstrap, which were common on sabres. If it's a cavalry sword, that would explain the length.

EDIT: It's also worth noting that the hilt has a left-handed loop guard. Nice attention to detail there, Nintendo.

I feel like the thing nobody is willing to point out is maybe the sword is illegal just because swords are violent weapons that can be used to attack people
