Hey guys, it's time for Map of the Month 112. Since Eddy is in Portugal, I am gonna cover for him this month. This month, we have two maps to choose from.

This map is a big chungus. It's from Beyond Hyrule DX, which is being worked on as part of Lunaria's Summer Refurbishing Quest Contest.

A cave filled with running water... the rate of erosion must be terrible!

Both are really great maps, but I think Matthew's variety of gorgeous areas is something I simply can't ignore.

Matthew: I'm a big fan of this map. I love the color palettes and the usage of so many different types of trees to give each area its own unique character. So many of the screens are beautiful on their own, and I really like the detailing that bring areas like the desert to life. I do have to say that the ice forest feels overplayed. I've seen it in lost of quests, and nothing about this one feels like it sets it apart. I have a similar feeling about the area in the lower left. Actually, now that I'm looking at it, the right side looks amazing to me, and the left looks considerably more average. Still, sometimes maps need more basic areas, and it's tough to keep everything feeling fresh and amazing. I do really like the few screens in the upper left, though.

HeroOfFire: I think you're in a tough spot as far as putting a single area map against such an expansive overworld. That's one of the bigger problems I have with Map of the Month as a whole, actually, but I still like looking at it as a showcase more than anything. I really like how much water this place has, and the interconnected nature of that central river. I could see this place being really interesting to explore in coming in from multiple entrances, then maybe returning later with the flippers. I do feel the palette is a bit plain and monochrome. I tend to prefer places that have a bit more color variety and highlights.

Matthew's get's my vote.

Yeah, I'm in a similar boat as Aevin. In a lot of ways, MotM is inherently unfair given that a larger map is usually gonna be more impressive than a single area map. Which kinda sucks, cuz HoF's map is pretty cool. Also seems to have a solid sense of progression to it; no matter which entrance you come from, you have to go through the same distance roughly to reach the boss screen.

With Matthew's, my thoughts are almost identical to Aevin's. I don't think there's a single bad area, though the right half of the map stands out much more than left. I do quite like the island though. The ice forest definitely isn't bad, but also definitely doesn't live up to Gollab's (which isn't too surprising given that this is refurbishing of an older quest). Overall, it's pretty fantastic looking though.

I feel bad for HeroOfFire because it's a good map but I had to vote for Matthew, that color palette works very well.
