If not, it deserves one. I would at least subscribe $1 to $5 per month if you guys had one as a way to help the devs.

I know that doesn't sound like much, but the numbers add up when there's enough people in full support.

Just a thought.

I think one possible issue is that, for now, Nintendo silently tolerates Zelda Classic because nobody is making money from it. If devs or quest makers start receiving money for their work, even if it's only a small amount, it could set a precedent that Nintendo wouldn't like.

I thought about that before, but emulators are making a ton using Patreon, because it is still technically legal since Patreon is a donation service and not exactly "selling a product".

Emulators are a different beast entirely than handing out Nintendo's own assets for free. In fact, I think emulators are actually legal, but I don't know this for certain. While I'd agree that Patreon should count as a loophole... I'm not entirely sure how well you would do defending yourselves in court over that. Plus, even if it was legal, if that attracted Nintendo's undue attention and the DMCA comes... We're boned either way.

Just, no. If someone wants to do shyte such as donating to /hardware/ , that is their decision, but the actual software is open source. We do not do this for money, and I would not open that can of worms, ever, ever.

It seems to me that you have a negative impression in supporting content creators through Patreon. I'm not trying to propose anything shady here, I just figured out it is a nice way to show support something I like and I wasn't sure if other people felt the same.

I Agree. We've already seen nintendo shut down fan projects such as Pokemon Uranium, and others have shut themselves down to avoid nintendo's wrath. (Project M for example) I don't wish the same to happen to ZC.

I actually used emulators to play games for a long time, but then i decided to stop, because playing games through emulators such as SNES9X or FCEUX might be illegal, because playing ROMs through Emulators is technically stealing, because you're playing games without paying for them at places like Nintendo Eshop, or Wii Shop Channel.

I don't think anyone dislikes supporting people through patreon. (Unless you're an evil person who hates people)

I think people are just worried that if Nintendo notices that people are receiving money for their work on ZC, they'll shut ZC down, which i don't think anyone wants to happen.

Yeah, they're legal.  There's precedent anyway, but even if there wasn't, emulators don't (or shouldn't) technically actually contain any copyrighted code, so there's really not much anyone can do against them.  (Non-homebrew ROMs, including BIOSes, are of course illegal to distribute.)

Zelda Classic is a grey area at best.  We've largely gotten by on Nintendo's good graces.  With that in mind, monetizing the program in any way might not be the best idea.

We exist because Nintendo is gracious enough to look the other way, as others have said. Even if legally sound, angering the Big N is pretty high up on the list of the dumbest things we could do.

That would put a target on our backs as the ZC community cause once the idea of money comes into play, Nintendo might notice as others have said. I'm not sure if they still know/ care about us, but it's probably a risky move at best.

If you want to set up something that would be beneficial, via Patreon, make a fund to pay for wholly original music, sound effects, and graphics. At the least, that (1) makes sense, and (2) is not a gigantic time bomb. It does not need to specifically be for ZQuest, for that matter. An original content repo for any similar gaming software would be genuinely useful, and appreciated by many communities.

Pretty much this. The best way to contribute to ZC is to donate your time and talent!
