I meant to open a quest project for this a while ago, but here it is now I guess. ;p

The overworld is loosely based on the Z1 overworld (emphasis on loosely), and it is complete other than secret placement.

There will be 9 dungeons that are medium or large in size, along with a handful of optional mini dungeons. Most of the dungeons haven't been started, but I am starting to work on them more. I have some interesting ideas for the dungeons, and I'm excited to see those take shape.

The dungeon progression starts very nonlinear, but becomes more linear as the quest nears its end, lining up with the structure of the plot.

Exploration will be encouraged in this quest as there are lots of optional items, upgrades, and expansions to find throughout the overworld.

I'm also attempting to create a combat system primarily based on a variety of unique spells which will be collected throughout the quest, but there will still be some non magic items. There are swords, but they have been balanced in a way that attempts to encourage the use of spells without making swords useless. My goal with the combat balance is to make the usefulness of items based less on damage output but by other properties instead, such as how its projectiles move, how it affects enemies, etc.

The music in this quest consists of 8 bit video game song arrangements written by various 8 bit remix youtubers. I've listened to at least 100 such arrangements to try to make music selections that fit as well as possible, and I think I've done a fairly good job at that.

Visually, I've been trying to make areas that have aesthetics that stretch the limits of classic. This is especially true of the dungeon themes. I've also been trying my best to make all custom tiles and sprites conform to classic style.

I hope to get this done sometime this year, but no promises. It'll be finished when it's finished. ;p

Edit 8/16/20: You may have noticed the broken image links above. That's because the images were hosted by PZC's quest project system, but they have since been removed from the project page for this quest because they are outdated images. This caused the image links above to break because the images no longer exist on PZC's server. Check the project page for this quest to see the updated versions of those images.

This seems really interesting. Your shots look nice, and I'm especially intrigued by the combat system. Big surprise, I'm sure, but I'm a sucker for magical spells. I'm curious to see how the melee and spell combat would balance out.

I was really interested by this one during the 6th contest. Am still very interested in it. The spell system sounds super interesting, and the aesthetics are beautiful. How much of it is done currently? Judging from screenshots, I'm guessing more OW than dungeon? :P

Heh, yeah, you would be right with that assumption, lol. I've started on one of the dungeons, but that's about it. ;p

Basically, during the 6th quest contest, I got the whole overworld done, and then I had a 2 month hiatus during February and March. In April, I spent most of the month polishing tiles and sprites (there were quite a few that I had made during the 6th quest contest that didn't match classic style very well), placing enemies on the overworld, and making a couple spells. I also started one of the dungeons during that time (designing the aesthetics mostly, along with making plans for the dungeon item and layout).

There hasn't been much progress during May because I've been working on a miniquest (the one that I teased in this week's SotW). I'm planning to have that one done by the end of next month. One thing I did do this month is make those Link sprites that are in the project page screenshots, which I think turned out great. I actually made those right before opening the quest project. ;p

But yeah, more progress on the dungeons will be made after I'm done with that miniquest. I've got some neat ideas for the dungeons (both aesthetically and mechanically), and I think they're going to be pretty neat when finished. :)
