Surprised there wasn't one already but I'm about 12 hours in and........

It's actually really good so far. Like, much better than what I was expecting from "lol BotW Sonic". I won't get into major spoilers, but I wanted to give this game a vote of confidence to anyone who might be on the fence about it. It's not perfect, but it's much more complete, and worth it than Forces ever was (and I liked what few levels were in Forces fwiw)

It's not a short game, and at it's best, it truly feels like a never ending Sonic level, and and at its lows, it's still nowhere near as bad as some of the other stuff I've played from this series. There's a ton of different moves and stuff, and honestly the only real downside is some of the 2D cyberspace levels are a bit of a drag, but they are serviceable. And there are also 3D ones so don't worry. They start out very short, but it seems like they are getting longer and more complex.

That's about all I can say without going into larger spoilers. Has anyone else given this a go yet? Thoughts?

Honestly, I'm positively surprised. I expected the worst, but it's kinda fun? I'm glad I gave it a chance.

as a longtime sonic fan i quite enjoy it so far, although i've only done one of the islands. it took a while to get going imo, early on in the game was definitely worse but the further you go the better its gotten, at least for me.

hope it continues to improve or at the very least remain fun.

What system did you guys buy it on? I'm debating Steam or Switch.

I'm planning to get this on Switch. I do not think my PC could handle the game unfortunately.

i'm actually really excited, i've seen a few mixed reviews but it's nice to see a sonic game getting some good press for once. aside from sonic mania the franchise has been in shambles for a while. i definitely want to check out frontiers, especially if it's as good as people are saying it is

music gets 100% budget.

programmers and QA get 0% budget.

as is customary.

unique music for all 30 cyberspace levels, for each boss & miniboss and dynamic music for the islands. i love it.

i like how the writers finally understand the characters. otherwise, the story is alright i suppose.

open-world exploration is great for sonic. you get the freedom of running around and doing stuff at your own leisure. there's some atrocious game design here and there, which i assume could sour the experience for some. but overall i really loved the game :3 i hope this means the series is back on track and they will continue in this direction.

i watched a review video of the game yesterday, and i have to be honest, i cringed pretty hard when i saw that green hill zone is in the game. it's not a dealbreaker or anything, but i mean, come on dude. i'd actually want to see a list of sonic games that DON'T feature green hill zone at this point; it would probably be pretty short.

I was completely negative on all of the preview footage for a while but better footage leading up to release plus positive fan feedback has made me genuinely interested in trying this out. Unlike Forces, where the buzz kept me the hell away until it was one of the monthly PS Plus games. "Well, as long as I'm not paying any extra for it..."

Forces is bad.

Anyway to relevancy, I have some mixed takes but it's at a point where I would at least want to try it and see for myself. The overworld gameplay seems more fun than I gave it credit for, but the cyberspace zones leave me feeling iffy. They're all so short, and so many are apparently just ripped wholesale from previous Sonic games... and there are so few aesthetical themes they use for these levels. The music seems great (I've become enamored with this in particular), but combat also looks... not very fun and rather repetitive. Combat is not a thing I play Sonic for. Ever. Remember Sonic the Fighters, that was a disaster!

Still, there may be something there, but I also wonder whether a game that's just decent has enraptured the fanbase because there hasn't been a good 3D game since Generations. Eleven years ago. So I also worry I'd come out of it going "well that was okay I guess," which is better than we've gotten for a long time apart from Mania, but I'd rather it just be good. Regardless, with a reasonable price drop (or possibly another PS Plus appearance), I would be willing to pick it up and try for myself. But that'll probably be some time from now.

I've finished the game! Still thinking about it, but I'd still say it's a good game overall. Better than decent, but not perfect either. Not every idea is perfect, and there were a few parts that were required, and quite annoying, but it wasn't enough to outweigh the rest of the game in terms of how much I enjoyed playing it. Most of what I said in my previous post stands, but having beat it, I'd add:

(No story spoilers btw, just gameplay stuff)

Spoiler

This next bit will go into some detail about the way progressions works. Again no story spoilers, but I will be going into collectibles, and objectives and stuff.

Spoiler

I acquired this on sale at GameStop, having bought it online and picked it up in-store. Then their system apparently didn't realize I'd already picked it up, and sent me an email saying it was ready for pickup. So I ignored it. And thus, they said they stopped holding it for me and refunded me. ... neat.

Anyway, if the game had sucked, that would've been awesome. It's still awesome, but I mean, hey, better to not pay for a bad game.

Thankfully, Sonic Frontiers is not a bad game.

Okay, alright, it's rough around the edges in plenty of parts, but I feel the good outweighs the bad. This is a solid base to fine-tune and expand upon. Exploring open zones and doing obstacles courses and such for progression macguffins is genuinely fun! The combat is actually for the most part entertaining, which is the aspect I thought would be the weakest going in, although you need to upgrade it somewhat significantly to reach that point. The music is great. Physics need some tweaking though, and some visual stylization would go a long way; Sonic in these realistic environments just isn't doing it for me.

Cyber Space is a letdown. Sometimes it's alright, but the fact there are only four skins and the fact they're almost all recycled level designs is annoying. These were the parts I was most looking forward to on announcement but lost my excitement the more I heard about them. I get there's a reason for the recycling, but I'm just tired of it in the games. That, and the physics are completely different than in the open zones? The boost, for instance, feels fucking awful. And you can't boost through enemies anymore! I also really don't like the delay after a homing attack. It make sense for combat, but combat is disabled in Cyber Space. If we're going to change physics between the gameplay segments, can we change how the homing attack works for smoother gameplay too?

The writing is pretty solid, though it does get a bit too reference heavy for the sake of it sometimes. For an anniversary game, I don't mind as much. I still gladly take this over the garbage we've been handed since Colors, though. Keep Ian Flynn. Will say it feels like there's something missing though? And not just with story, but in general. I found myself at the final boss unexpectedly, and it does feel like in some respects it was rushed. Yet, it still managed to be a thirty-hour experience, unheard of for a main series Sonic game!

At least it didn't feel unfinished in the way Sonic Forces did.

Sage is a great character and I hope we see more of her. Eggman... didn't have a whole lot of presence? Like in general, cutscene production values seem to have dipped since... well, Colors, again. I can understand it being a boon for younger players who may not want to sit through too much cutscene out of impatience, but I don't know, it kind of hampers the otherwise good story in the game.

Some of the challenges are repetitive. Some of the obstacle courses bizarrely force you into a 2D perspective in what's supposed to be an open 3D environment, and sometimes you can find yourself thrown into them without warning.

For the most part, the bosses are actually really fucking good. There's a few that suck, but the multiple ones that hit, they really hit. I'm frankly impressed, these are the best Sonic bosses in... well, a very, very long time. Maybe the best bosses in a 3D Sonic game, period.

There's probably more thoughts I could spew but I don't feel like making a spoiler block for more in-depth stuff. Suffice it to say that it has its lows, but when it's good, it's really good. I just wish "best 3D Sonic game since Generations" actually had some weight to it, considering the competition is Lost World and Forces. And Boom, before some smartass says something. If you're on the fence, wait for a sale like I did, but I definitely felt it was worth my time. All thirty hours of it.
