Okay, so first, I should state that I don't play the newest version of Zelda Classic. I play version 2.50.2, because I use a Mac.

So, I usually have it at a fairly big size. I don't remember the exact size, because it's been a while since I set it, but I'd say it's about 2000 pixels horizontally, and about 1000 pixels vertically.

But yesterday, I was playing a game, and I took a screenshot, and then the game froze up, and it crashed. When I opened it back up again, the window had shrunk! I clicked on Misc in the pause screen, and checked out "video mode," and I got a window saying "MacOS X Windowed Quartz" "640x480 8-bit".

So, I looked up how to resize the window, and they all said to edit ag.cfg using Notepad. Well, I have a Mac, and Notepad's a Windows application, but I do have Wine, so I can try that, but I'll try it with TextEdit first.

I opened up ag.cfg using TextEdit, and changed resx and resy, and opened up Zelda Classic again, and...it was still small. It was still 640x480.

"Okay," I thought. "I'll just try it with Notepad then." So I repeated the process, just using Notepad instead of TextEdit.

I opened up Zelda Classic again.

Failure. I closed out the window.

But not only that, when I went back to Notepad to close out the window I had opened, I received this pop-up:

"This file has been modified by another program. Do you want to reload it?"

When I click yes, the values for resx and resy just revert back to 640 and 480. If I click no, it doesn't revert, but if I try to open up Zelda Classic after that, it'll still be at 640x480, and when I close out of that, it'll give the same message on Notepad again.

I've tried redownloading 2.50.2, but when I open that, it defaults to 640x480.

I've tried changing the window size using the launcher, but it just doesn't even register it's changed.

What do I do? It seems like it just refuses to change—it just shrugs off everything I've tried and continues to be small.

It's even more frustrating because it's never done this before—it's been big for literally years, and it's only given me problems now.

Can anyone help me? Please?

If you tried to edit the config file while any of the exes related to ZC are open, it will NOT work. As soon as you close the program, it overwrites all changes to the configs; you need to close everything before you open the config in your editor.

But I did edit the file while ZC was closed.

It's just that when I opened it up again afterwards, the changes didn't register, and then they were overwritten when I closed it again.

I even restarted my computer and tried again, just to make sure. Same problem.

Is it possible TextEdit was in rich text mode? That'd save data for stuff like bold/underline which would possibly render the cfg files unreadable. IDK if that'd cause ZC to revert your changes, but could be worth a check.

I checked for that, but if that's the case, then using Notepad would have worked, right?

Yeah, notepad should have worked then...

Have you tried launching using ZCL?

Yes I have. I've set the parameters using ZCL, and launched it—it doesn't work.

I've restarted my computer, so I'm going to try repeating some of my previous methods—see if anything changes.

Unfortunately, if a simple restart doesn't fix it, then I have nothing else I can think of to help.

And, due to Mac dropping 32-bit support, ZC will not run at all on Mac going forward; which means we likely won't be developing for Mac again. At least, until we re-write ZC to use all 64-bit stuff; but even than Mac seems to be going for "Let's be assholes to developers" as their policy, so...

(On the other hand, we have Linux builds in progress presently)

So, I've tried these methods again, and no dice.

But, there is something interesting.

When I opened ZCL (and this problem might have been here before, but I just didn't notice it), it had a little red banner at the top, that said "Zelda Classic was not detected. Please place ZCL in the ZC directory."

Which was weird to me, because they are in the same directory. The message is still there whenever I try to open it.

Could that have anything to do with the problem?

I FIGURED IT OUT!

IT'S BACK TO NORMAL!

I checked the Allegro log, and what I found was this:

Used switch: -fullscreen
Unable to set gfx mode at -1 8bpp 2000 x 1000
Unable to set gfx mode at -1 8bpp 640 x 480
-fullscreen not supported by your video driver! setting -windowed switch
Unable to set gfx mode at -2 8bpp 320 x 240
set gfx mode succsessful at -2 8bpp 640 x 480

That was weird to me, so I checked ag.cfg, and, sure enough, it was set to fullscreen = 1!

So I changed it back to fullscreen = 0, and set resx and resy to 2000 and 1000, and it worked!

Consider this case solved!
