People do have opinions that differ, but the measure of art is anything BUT purely subjective.
No one is going to say my music is as good as Mozart, my writing is as good as Shakespeare,
Mark Twain, or Isaac Asimov. And no one is going to say I can sing as well as Elvis.
I might, I hate Elvis's voice. icon_shrug.gif

Do you think no one can tell when a musician plays a wrong note? When their instrument is
off-pitch? When a singer is off-key?
Those are situations where the artist is trying to do one thing, but accidentally does another. I'm talking about the situation where you have The Clash's London Calling and Talking Heads' Remain in Light and you have to decide which one is better.

When an author goes off on a tangent that is totally
not relevant to his story?
That can be good in stream of consciousness writing.

When an art student hasn't learned to apply color theory?
What if the intention is to create something that is anti-color theory?

Do you think no one can tell whether a long edit or a short edit is better in a film?
Don't know what you're trying to say here.

Do you think a comedian can't tell if a joke falls flat?
What about if a comedian tells a joke that 50% of people find funny and 50% of people don't? The funniness of his joke isn't objective.

As for methods of measurement, there is composition, complexity, plot, structure, continuity,
design, color balance, texture, concision (or lack of), pace, size, dramatic impact, proportion,
context, descriptiveness, vagueness, etc.
And all of these are subjective to the listener. There are songs that make me choke up when I hear them and other people will say "this sucks" in the same situation.

Do you think judges and art professors are randomly pulling judgments out of a place where
the sun doesn't shine?
Kind of. A judge grades many aspects of the piece. For example, a judge at a piano concerto will examine the piece beforehand and grade the performers replication of that piece, the technical, difficulty, and other factors that are more or less able to be agreed on. However, if you're looking at whether a person will enjoy that piece, it's pretty much subjective.
