Recently, I played the DoR demo #2 and it gave me an idea.

There was a cutscene where the screen was shifted over to show a bridge that was out. I got to thinking "It would be neat if I could do a lazy method of bringing attention to things like that without making a new screen."

Well, while this isn't a lazy method, I have sort of figured a way to do something like this.

Basically, this gives the effect of the screen automatically scrolling to show something off in the distance. It's not perfect... and I can't really explain it (if someone who plays the sample could explain it, that would be appreciated).

It uses layers, tic warps, conveyors, and scrolling warps. To get an idea of what to do, try out the sample quest I made (import QSU->Save). Though the tile warps are filled in, the only tile warp in use is the one on the initial screen (screen 00).

Using this strange combination has some problems, though.
  • You cannot have the tic warps send you to the exact edge of a screen. Though this makes it insanely fluid, this causes scrolling issues for some reason.
  • You can't use a stair warp to initiate the scrolling sequence (I dunno why, but it also gave me warp issues).

I'm sorry the example quest (everything is on map 2) is so messy, but I'm a messy person. If someone wants to perfect this (or make a decent sample quest), feel free to try it. icon_razz.gif

(Why is everyone so afraid of this topic? icon_razz.gif icon_lol.gif )

I took a look at it, Nick, and I was impressed by the theory of it all. It seems to function quite nicely. (Although, to be quite frank, I opened the QSU in one of my quest files, and accidentally saved over it. No more quest for me. icon_sweat.gif ) Quick Question though. What kind of errors did you get when you tried the stair and tic warp? What was the effect?

I once just made a bunch of graphics that slowly moved into another making a moving scene, but took up wayyyy to much room. Good idea

The screen scrolled in the wrong direction, basically. icon_shrug.gif

Make a pit warp a scrolling warp. If you want the screen to scrol right, the player must walk onto the pit from the left (walking right). The pit warp will scroll teh screen, but you'll be at teh edge, so a side warp on that to put you back would do well, maybe a pit warp to the left to scroll back.

When I get a chance.. . I will release my made up version of this experiment. . .

While I was away from PZC for along time. (Yes, I did pop up every now and then.) I sat at my ouse on my sucky computer playing ZQ and tring to figure out different ways to do certain things. . . and it hit me. . .

You start a screen off in the middle of the map or at least in the middle of the Dmap. . . Now to do this you must make a screen in the direction you want to scroll by doing this experiment. . .

Oh yes. . . when Link walks to a certain part of a path, you must make stair warps there so he can stop and go into the cutscene. . . icon_biggrin.gif

Doing this, make the next in the direction you want it to scroll and then set the time - warps to what ever you want. . . OH, and dobn't forget to click the direction or side you use in the side warps option. . .

The other screens Time - Warps should be set at 2 for it will it jump to the next screen faster. . . While at the screen Link is looking at from a distance. . . Set the Time - Warps to 360 or 420 for at least on string to finish. . . or you could add 500 seconds onto that and make it last long enough for two strings. . . icon_wink.gif
