Also, Xander Mobus confirmed to be returning as announcer.

I thought that said "character" at first.

... I'd be okay with this.

That could just be a quirk in the engine, or something they haven't fine tuned yet.

And as far as Zelda goes, yeah, I also have trouble gauging her age wise, but it looks like they tried to take her young form, and make her look slightly older? idk. I mean really, she's been 'young' in every game (under, or around 20-ish?). This is not confirmed, but she always appears to be quite young, and in BotW she is said to be 17, but looks like an "adult" so, thanks to Japan's unique standards, it's anyone's guess to how old she really is :P.

On a whole, this is the first time I've felt an echo of hype for a Smash game. I don't know why, but Sm4sh just never gelled with me. I was there for the Brawl Hype though. This probably won't equal that, more so because it is less time between announcement, and release, but I am at the very least, excited for this. :D

After watching the Invitational, it was mentioned and seems to be intentional with the engine. Less combo friendly, faster and more aggressive gameplay I guess is what they are going for. Not sure if I like the new style or not. I'm not much of a hardcore Smash player in the slightest, but I didn't feel Smash 4's formula really needed much changing if at all.

It looks like they just pasted ALBW Zelda's head on an adult body and felt that was enough the more I look at her. I hope they do some adjustments because she just weirds me out the more I try to figure out what exactly is off.

When you realize you can technically still call this "Smash U" or "SSBU." Time to confuse everyone.

Every character coming back is exciting, but I wonder what they're going to do with Young Link (if anything) to make him feel less redundant.

Seems there's a discussion going on if this is an actual new game or just a port of Smash 4. Honestly, kind of hard to tell.

I won't echo (no pun intended) what everyone else has said, so I'll add an observation that hasn't been mentioned yet:

Seems they toned down Zero Suit Samus' sexualisation, which is a good thing imo. More natural makeup and smaller titties. I was never a fan of her pornstar look.

They did however make her leg muscles more prominent.

We Chun Li now.

Lol, maybe not that extreme, but yeah. Makes sense with all her kicking though.

I just noticed something interesting too. You know how Blood Falcon drives the Blood Hawk, right?

I guess in Japan it's called the Hell Hawk:

He'll probably just remain a Toon Link echo is my guess. Maybe give him a new move or two.

Pretty obvious this isn't a port. More of an Ultimate Smash game with a new engine, items, etc.

Now how much new content that is actually in the game that has never been in a previous Smash game and how different it will be from Smash Wii U is the actual question.

Young Link's confirmed to not be an Echo fighter. Chances are, he'll probably play more closely to previous iterations of Normal Link since HIS moveset is so much more different now.

Speaking of echo fighters, I just realized how many good candidates for echo fighters there currently are:
Shadow for Sonic - Actually has a good chance of making it into the game, echo fighter or not, as he hasn't been in any promotional material whatsoever as an assist trophy like he is in every other appearance. I'm pretty excited to see if they actually do something with Shadow or not.

Ken for Ryu - Honestly it seems like a missed opportunity not to do this. With how Ken in a lot of the early Street Fighters is essentially just Ryu with slight alterations (Especially to Shoryuken), this would actually be perfect.
Ms. Pac-Man for Pac-Man - Or at the very least make her an Alph to Olimar styled alt, I'm surprised this ISN'T a thing yet.

Dark Samus for Samus - Another similar thing to Shadow. I haven't really seen her make an appearance as an assist trophy yet (Though I could be wrong), and she'd either make a great echo fighter or even an individual fighter if they get right down into it.

These are some wild ideas I have for this game. Some of them may sound plausible to be in the game while others have no chance of being in the final game.

For Young Link's final smash, he should puts on his Oni Link mask and does a bunch sword beam attacks that destroys everyone in its way.

A fun assist trophy would be Akuma from Street Fighter. He could do his Wrath of the Raging Demon to one hit KO his victim. I would also be ok with Ken doing his ultra moves or Chun Li doing her lightning kicks as assist trophies.

Speaking of third party assist trophies, wouldn't it be totally be awesome if the Knights of the Round from FF7 was an assist trophy.

The motorcycle from Breath of the Wild's newest expansion could be an interesting item.

You know what would be totally wild as an item. The crazy 8 item from Mario Kart 8. It gives you 8 items when you pick it up. A lot of the items from Mario Kart are in Smash Brothers, so this could work out pretty well.

I still want to see a random goldeen transform into a garados. It would be the perfect surprise. Most goldeens just splash around useless, but rare ones will transform into garados and use a crazy attack like hyper beam.

How about making Taboo from Subspace Emissary as an assist trophy. It would be totally mean if he did his ultra attack during all of that chaos of an 8 player battle royal.

Making a Pokemon Champion as an assist trophy would be a twist. They summon one of their pokemon to attack you. If you KO one of their pokemon, they will summon another pokemon and keep on doing this until their time runs out. Professor Kukui, Cynthia, or Blue would be good choices.

A unique item idea would be to use the item from Ninja Gaiden 2 that makes red images of Ryu that follow him and attack when he does. Imagine Samus shooting a fully charged blast with two images doing the exact same thing.

Here is a wild one. How about a trophy stand item. When you throw it at a player, it turns them into a trophy. The higher the percent they have, the longer it takes for the player to turn back to normal. If another player collects the trophy, it counts as a ring out and the score goes to the player that picks up the trophy.

How about a Mario Party type level. There is a dice that randomly appears in places. The player that hits it will move a token on the board. Depending on where it lands, either good stuff (like HP recovery or an item given) will happen, or bad stuff (set off a crazy hazard affecting the whole level) will happen. A mini game could happen similar to the Warrior Ware level.

For those wondering how Young Link will differ from Link or Toon Link:
1) Young Link has the residual spin attack he had in Melee, where it hits multiple times AND then launches, as oppose to Link's one fell swoop and Toon Link's Hurricane Spin with not all that much launching power.
2) Young Link has the infinite A combo like characters like Fox or Captain Falcon, so he's got a pretty instant edge out there.
3) In Melee, his physics were different from Link's slightly, but he still had a feel of gravity, which is more than I could say about Toon Link who can pretty much just jump all the way to the sun if he wanted to.
4) I doubt Young Link has Link's INSANE buffed Sword Range

tl;dr: He's likely gonna be a middleman between Link's Heavy and Strong gameplay and Toon Link's insanely floaty and even somewhat slow gameplay. Let's hope that mix doesn't ultimately mean he under performs in both areas when the game's meta develops though. All in all, I think Young Link is different enough to separate himself from the other two Links even without moveset alterations.

So here's some of my thoughts on the new game so far. Keep in mind this is coming from someone who plays melee competitively and loves melee a ton.

I think one of my favorite things about the new game is that all the characters are returning. I'm basically positive this game will be focusing on the legacy and history of past games. You'll unlock characters and stages as you progress through the history of smash. I think this focus on history and legacy is really cool.

Mechanics wise, adding directional air dodging doesn't actually seem that impactful since you can't wave dash or wave land, which was what made direction air doding interesting (you can technically sort of wave dash and wave land but it's literal garbage and is basically useless). BUT what I am happy about is that they actually added lag to airdodging so you can't just spam it now. Juggles and edge guards are now actually a thing which is such a substantial improvement over smash 4.

I also like the buffs to aerial approaches and just the speed of the game in general. Aerials can actually be safe on shield in this game which means aggression is actually going to be more rewarded. Compared to smash 4 in which shield was just stupid busted and defensive play was way better than offensive play.

I don't think the nerfs to roll and dodge are remotely meaningful in a competitive environment as people aren't rolling six times in a row. Only bad smash 4 players do that, not good ones.

The new perfect shield mechanic, it's interesting, but honestly I think it could back fire and be a buff to shield. You're technically never safe attacking shield now which is kind of horrifying. The ability to power shield out of shield is actually something you can kind of do in melee as peach with shield - > double jump land -> powershield and honestly I think that has broken potential. So I'm worried about this new mechanic.

The most important new mechanic added, besides probably the nerf to air dodging and the overall increased speed, is definitely being able to do any move out of run. Honestly it still doesn't look as nuanced as melee dash dancing but this is a huge step up from smash 4. My biggest complaint in that game by far is lack of movement options. The game is literally just slow and it's cumbersome to move around. Even watching top players they have to work around the engine in annoying ways to get the spacing they want. So this will be a huge step up from that.

Honestly it's still so dumb that you don't keep your momentum after jumping. That is such a small detail which makes melee and 64 so much better. It doesn't make any sense that you're momentum just dies when you jump. It also severely limits approaching options which means it's a nerf to general aggressive play.

Also, as everyone has pointed out, the new momentum after getting hit is super weird and just doesn't make much sense. Also personally I think characters live too long. Like you shouldn't live on average to 150. Scaling it down twenty five or thirty percent would be good I think.

I'm glad they changed rage to make it more predictable and workable.

The general feel of the game lends itself to a three stock format. The thing is though, with characters living to such high percents and rage now minimized, there isn't much room for comebacks. Recoveries have been nerfed but it's still nowhere near melee levels where gimps are common. This seems to lead to some boring matches honestly. Some of the games in the invitational, one player got ahead and there didn't seem to be a realistic way of coming back. Rage was awful in smash 4 but I have to admit, it was so jank it kept things interesting and people on their toes. Something stupid could always happen so no lead was 100% certain. But this game has smash 4's neutral heavy mechanics without any of the dumb stuff that could get you easily killed. So every matchup might be like a floaty matchup where it's super hard to come back. That said, Zero, the best smash 4 player, has said he feels like this game allows you to exert more pressure and make more plays than smash 4, so hopefully when the game is played at a high level, the mechanics will allow comebacks and leads won't all but guarantee a win.

Overall I am optimistic about the game. I am really hoping they at least add wave lands and maybe make dash dancing better. They've already made some good steps but these mechanics would still undoubtedly benefit the game. I'll probably play pichu when it comes out, assuming he isn't trash like in melee.

A few Echo Fighters I want that I haven't seen mentioned yet:

Octoling for Inkling

Malos for Shulk (assuming Rex is added)

Deoxys for Mewtwo (although I think he's already confirmed to be a pokeball Pokemon)

Phoenix Wright takes the stand!

Hey, nothing would surprise me now that Ridley is in. On top of all of the other special characters from previous entries such as Duck Hunt. Wright has been included in another fighting game after all.
