I continued building a map of premade Z1 dungeon room layouts to be used in my next quest as well as to release on the Database.

                        Not finished, yet...

...but yeah, I'm working on my TARDIS interior graphics.
And YES, I know this looks more like the 9th's / 10th's TARDIS while I use the 4th Doctor

...but 10 had the best Tardis look.
Just my personal opinion.

Not just today, but I've been making a lot of progress on my new quest as of late and discovered an approach of making quests that works much better for me.

 

What I used to do was create the quest in a very linear fashion: sprite/rip everything I think I'd need; make a bare layout for an entire overworld map; detail all the screens; place npcs; place enemies; make interiors; etc. For any familiar with software development, this is called "waterfall project management".

 

That used to have the effect on me that I got bored of doing the same repetitive job in order to make progress with the quest. So what I do now instead is focus on finishing a small portion at once, that way I'm able to test that within several hours of ZQuesting and improve things immediately after testing. The constant feedback (and joy while playtesting) is much more motivating and I think also resulting in a much higher quality product. This is called "agile project management", developing in a short iterations, with continuous feedback. Any ideas or tasks that I don't want to work on directly, I just write down for later. Anytime I'm unsure what to do next, I pick something off that list!

 

And I'm having much more fun, working on all kinds of things all the time. Spriting, mapping, detailing, scripting, sound, music, and playtesting... I should've worked like this a long time ago!

 

 

As for today, I'm going to whip up a SotW and MotM submission and perhaps make some screens after dinner.

Finished planning out a script for digging claws in my quest. They'll allow for Link to dig away dirt walls in 4 directions. Once I have a prototype working I plan to expand it to allow for various object to be hidden in the dirt, such as chests, obstacles and traps. Then I plan to include platforms that will drop into place when the dirt is removed to allow Link to walk over them and finally, add functionally allowing Link to dig into caves while standing on special combos.

 

Best part is this all works using Combo scripts! No FFCs needed :D

Released my first lump of coal for you stockings.
