What are your most favourite narratives of all time, in media? In books, movies, tv series, games and others.

This topic is supposed to be for recommendation purposes for people looking for good stories in general! NO SPOILERS!
I know it's super hard to pick your absolute favourites, but they must exist, right?

Personally I never read books.. and don't watch movies or tv series. So my list will be mostly games. Mostly games with less focus on gameplay :P

Games:

Ace Attorney Games
A classic among visual novels, featuring murder mysteries, courtroom action and a lot of charm.
The original trilogy has brilliant stories, many of which are intertwined. The third game wraps things up super well. The other games are nice too, but avoid Dual Destinies.

Steins;Gate
This story is very very interesting. It's a science fiction drama about time travel. The characters are extremely good! Especially the protagonist. This starts out as a slice-of-life for like half of the story before it gets serious. I'd recommend the visual novel over the anime.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
This must be my all time favourite mystery story! It's a unique visual novel / puzzle like game about a murder. Your own murder in fact. Awesome and charming presentation and characters and intertwined stories.

Life is Strange and Life is Strange: Before the Storm
Very good, slice of life esque high school drama with mystery. The first game also has supernatural time travel stuff. Before the Storm features some nice romance. Stay away from Life is Strange 2! It’s awful.

Beyond Two Souls
This is a story focused on a girl with a ghost by her side. It’s a thrilling journey with interesting plots and incredible presentation. There’s a lot of variety here. A fun ride I highly recommend.

AI: The Somnium Files
A murder mystery story with great characters and intertwined mysteries. There are puzzle sections in this game where you enter people’s dreams. The story also explores the matter of parenting in a lot of ways? I loved finding out everything about the characters and unraveling the mysteries.

Xenoblade Chronicles
So this is an RPG, the only RPG on my list. Huh. The plot, the twists and presentation of everything make this a really great narrative. Aside from the story, the gameplay is alright, but what I enjoyed a lot are the world and areas you run through.

Celeste
A precision platformer with big focus on the gameplay. The gameplay and story and everything come together to a cohesive experience. The story feels very real. This game is just overall a joy!

Night in the Woods
This is a story focused game, with some well crafted exploration. A slice of life kinda narrative with mystery. The characters are really good and relatable and it touches on a lot of philosophical themes. Game reminded me of Life is Strange but with better writing.

Movies:

Lilo and Stitch
Very sweet. This story I loved a lot. The hawaii plus sci-fi theme of it is pretty cool. The other movies and main TV series are pretty good too.

Harry Potter movies / books
I probably don’t have to explain it. Just an overall good and relatable narrative, wrapped around magic. I actually like them all. The books are probably the better way to experience this.

TV Series:

Avatar: The Last Airbender
I watched quite a few TV shows as a kid, but no narratives have stood out as much as this. I watched the whole series like 3 times. Great characters, plot, world building and presentation!

Death Note
An interesting and clever anime about crimes, problems and a supernatural notebook.

Honorable mentions:

Here some narratives I loved which I omitted because they're not absolute favourites:

Detroit: Become Human, Heavy Rain, Danganronpa Games, Zero Escape: 999 and Virtues Last Reward, Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, Suikoden Tierkreis,
Finding Nemo, Tangled (2010), Naruto, original Yu-Gi-Oh series.

Nice list! :D

Games:

  • Tales of Symphonia:  (PC / PS2 / GCN) - A very, very long romp through fantasy lands where the story unfolds in more and more intricate and unexpected ways.  The plot seems to have more twists and turns than a length of rope.  At some point when you think you're just about finished with the game, you experience three major plot-twists in a row so quickly you'll get whiplash.

  • Freelancer: (PC) - A space flight sim game where immersion and simplicity are highlighted.  Everyone is voice-acted to near-perfection with famous voice actors like John Rhys-Davies (Indiana Jones) and George Takei (Star Trek) in a story where something dark and sinister is taking place in the inner reaches of the Quadrant, and your feeling of security and well-being quickly diminishes the more you explore the sinister underpinnings of the game's plotline with your new-found friends and allies.  Definitely one of my top-10 favorite games, easily.
  • Wing Commander:  (PC) - Similar to the above, it's an immersive mission-based semi-linear space flight combat sim where your successes and failures dictate which "plotline" you follow, complete with mission briefings and debriefings and interactive cutscenes between missions.  It's earned a very strong narrative through its devotion to immersion.

Television:

  • Doctor Who:  - I've only really seen Eccleston through Smith, (9th through 11th) but it's abundantly clear that each episode features a strong devotion to a sense of doing the right thing, being the best you can be, and striving for the ideal outcome.  The Doctor generally explains his reasoning very well in each episode, and it creates a strong sense of adventure in each episode.

That's all I have time for at present; gotta get to work.  Great topic!

Smith is my favourite "New-Who", Tom Baker is my favourite classic...
...if you've just seen 9-11, I promise you, you will love 12 (Capaldi)

Avatar: The Last Airbender
I watched quite a few TV shows as a kid, but no narratives have stood out as much as this. I watched the whole series like 3 times. Great characters, plot, world building and presentation!

Avatar was amazing...but I didn't like "The Legend of Kora".

Games:

TLoZ: I didn't play all titles, yet. But I love every title, I've played.
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1+2 (#1 was the best title) and Defiance.
Terranigma: What a heart tearing up game.

TV:

Excuuuuse me :) .... I really liked the Zelda Cartoon series, in the Mario Bros. Super Show
DOCTOR WHO 4 EVER #1.
Masters of the Universe was my favourite show, when I was a child

Movies:

A Chinese Ghost Story (ya'll 'gotta watch it)
Warlock 1 (2 was sh*t)
Highlander 1
...and so many more.

One more thing about the Avatar (Legend of Aang) franchise...
...The "Last Airbender" movie, was pretty disappointing.

Shame on you, Mr. Shyamalan! ;)

btw...
What a terrible cast.
Best actor was the CGI Appa.

Books:

The Dark Tower, Harry Potter, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Chronicles of Narnia, A Song of Fire & Ice, Lord of the Rings, His Dark Materials, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Watchmen. Probably a lot more that I cant think of at the moment.

Games:

Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Danganronpa, Doki Doki Literature Club, Final Fantasy series, Legend of Legaia, Metal Gear solid series, Undertale, Xeno series.

Movies:

Most of anything MCU related, most of anything Disney and Pixar related, most of anything Ghibli related. I'm not too picky when it comes to movies honestly. Even if a movie's plot is not that great I can still enjoy it for the entertainment value. Same goes for TV shows. More often than not I don't even have the patience to binge an entire TV series. The only one that comes to mind of recent memory is The Mandalorian.
