As someone who has played the games for as long as I can remember, this is something I get asked a lot by other people who play the games. Gen 1, 2 and 4 seem to be pretty popular choices when this question comes up, but as for me my favorite Generation is actually the 5th.

I find it hard to really dislike any of them, but which ones do you really like?

If we're just going by games... Well since it's multiple choice, I found it hard not to include gen 1 with my answer, if only because it launched me into this world. And there's still a lot I enjoy about the first generation on its own, mainly in its world and bits of lore sprinkled in, as well as its exploration. The same carries over into my actual favorite generation, the second. I love the world, the soundtrack, the fact that we get to go back to Kanto, everything was just great.

But I enjoyed gen 7 a lot too. Some cool new Pokemon, some neat variations of older ones... bit tutorial-heavy earlier but it had the best story in the series, the best characters, some of the best music, and I love that the world finally came to life in a full 3D way, instead of confining itself to a grid like all previous games had (understandable for 2D, not so much for 3D). It honestly felt more alive than any game I'd played before it.

Now if the question were about which generations were our favorite in terms of the Pokemon themselves, well, gen 2 wins by default because it has Pichu. :heh:

My favorites are 1, 3 and 7 by far.

Black 2 is my least favorite out of the ones i've played so far.

If purely going by the games, I pick Gen IV and specifically D/P/Pt; with only VII (specifically OG Sun/Moon. US/UM are poorly designed cashgrabs that consist largely of stuff that should have been patched into the original games) possibly coming close to it. D/P and especially Platinum, even with the issues they have (like the awful HM usage at times and Stark Mountain is badly designed), I consider to have best region design and combined everything good about the previous games into one package.

If talking about the pokemon... I don't think I can pick a clear winner. It'd be a definite tossup between III, IV and VII. All three of those generations all have equally as great pokemon lineups with various strong points and their weak points; I can't choose any one of those.

Got only as far as Gen 5 and I didn't like it. I guess Crystal is my oldschool favorite without abilities and everything after were just preparations for SM which I really want to play.

For pokemon I would go with Gen 1. The art is lovely and while it doesn't have much story, the TV-series added plenty. At least going for liking only, the battle strength being so unbalanced throughout the whole series and stuff like DVs were never to my liking.

Sun and Moon are the best games, but generation 6 introduced the best mechanic with mega evolutions, and i really don't like the dance attacks from sun and moon. X and Y's story was pretty awful for me, but it still had nice gameplay. But yeah, gonna go with 6 and 7.

I've played all except for gens 4 and 5, my options are a little more limited lol. I loved gen 3 a lot, and that's what got me into the whole Pokemon series. It is definitely one of the gens I've had the most fun with and I really liked the whole dual villain team concept they had going on where they were against each other but also against you, which added quite a bit to the story IMO, so that's kind of an obvious pick there for me :P And since the remakes are included with Gen 6, I picked that too, but only because of ORAS I suppose (and they made RSE even better for me).

Gen 7 is another pick for me, after playing SM/USUM recently I had such a blast with the games and it was probably the most fun I've had with a Pokemon game in quite some time honestly. I also really like the Alola region, each island kinda had a unique thing going on and the change from your standard Pokemon Gyms was very refreshing to see (even though some later trials felt a little rushed).

Sun and Moon are, by far, my favorite Pokemon games, so Gen 7 gets my vote. After that... I dunno, I'm a bit confused. HG/SS and OR/AS are close contenders for second, but at the same time I disliked X/Y and a lo of Gen 6 stuff, so if I wanna vote for OR/AS, do I vote for Gen 3 or 6? I guess in the end, I liked HG/SS a lot and I loved a lot of gen 4's mechanic changes, so I'm marking 4 and 7.

Ill be that guy....Im definitely a "Genwunner". Theres just too much that I like about the R/B/Y/G games, especially how bad they can be broken. Its like I never have to play it the same way, and I can get together a whole party before I start a file since I have Stadium and an N64. The introduction of the Red Randomizer just furthers the amount of things you can do, like adding pokemon from other generations. Too bad it doesnt add a whole lot of moves to the pool, maybe there isnt a lot of space to put new attacks into the rom, and they probably are harder to make than just the pokemon themselves.

Gen II I got to play only a couple years back, but it was definitely really solid. Of course, everyone brings up the fact of going back to Kanto, because thats always nice. And they never really told you about it either, until you got off the water and the guy says "Do you know what you just did?".

Gen III was another one that I really ended up liking. It was interesting to hear about the lore for Groudon, Kyogre and Rayquaza. But this is also the game where the quality of the new pokemon goes downhill. Its also where they started saying "Oh, there needs to be like 15 legendaries in every new game" and it completely ruined the impact that it had when you encountered one. It just meant that it was gonna be a pain in the butt to catch. I spent 2 whole weeks to catch Groudon, only for him to get caught in.....a Love Ball lmao.

Gen IV is where I ultimately hit the wall, and is about where I stop being a pokemon fan. Now before I say any of this, we are all entitled to our opinion, and I know that some of the newer games are peoples favorites. No disrespect to that, but my opinion of these games is........terrible. The pokemon feel closer to a chinese knock-off rather than real pokemon, and some of them are just downright awful. The storyline was bland and never once intrigued me. I tried pushing through, but it just kept getting worse as I went on.

From here out, I dont have an opinion because I havent played the games. I even tried to play OR/AS, but the new editions since the original GBA version made the game not feel fun at all. That, and I swear the health bars drop slower and slower every game. Its like I attack, then wait for 2 minutes while the health goes down pixel by pixel.

I really do enjoy the pokemon franchise, but the games nowadays are like a bad joke to me. When I see the new commercials, I just kind of chuckle. Did we get the infamous chair pokemon yet? We've got a lamp, so if we can get a chair, a table, and a dinner-plate, we could have the Dining Room Gym in the next game. Oh wait, we already have a dinner plate pokemon.

Its like how Paper Mario is nothing like it used to be, which in turn made the new ones terrible. I know its in the basic design to do something new for an installment of a game series, but removing key mechanics that make the game unique just makes the series fall dead. Now if I want to play Paper Mario, I play the Mario and Luigi games, because all the good parts of Paper Mario got thrown into those for some reason.

I'm suprised that everyone voted for gen 7. I mean the pokémon were great, but the games were the most lackluster by far. Even X and Y were more enjoyable than SM, and USUM weren't that much better and ended up being more disappointing.

I thought Sun was great, but it doesn't have much of a post-game, which is an issue.

Also, the Dining Room Gym was the first one in Black and White, if I remember correctly. It's a restaurant, I think.

My favourite is probably Gen IV, because that's where I started. Almost all of the music - maybe not the generic legendary battle theme - is good (a big draw for me, as a musician), the story works well for me, and it actually has a post game. Platinum's even better for that, with the Battle Frontier.

Yes, I know Gen 3 has a battle frontier, but I've only played until the champion in Emerald, and I never beat him.

The issue with Gen V is that it tried to reinvent the games, but ultimately failed at it. I think they're good games, but I don't think Pokémon needed the fresh start that Gen V tried to give the series. Gen VII, however, succeeded in this respect.

Also, Gen II is great. I haven't beaten the remakes yet, but so far, it's only been an improvement (except the music, which they maybe over-dramaticised. Still good, but not quite as good). In any case, that makes Gen IV even better.

EDIT: Haven't tried VI at all, so dunno. Like some of the Pokémon, though.
