The newest official Ghosts 'n Goblins game
Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection - Announcement Trailer

In Japan, “Ghosts 'n Goblins” is said to be the most popular and famous Type B of NES games. Zelda 1’s second quest is a bit difficult but it doesn't tend to be called Type B in Japan.

I never really got the appeal of the original Ghosts 'n Goblins. It has some good tunes, but the game itself is pretty clunky and basic and the difficulty rather forced. Plus the padding where you have to replay the whole thing for the true ending. I suppose it was the original troll game. This new game on the other hand looks pretty great.

Very first Ghosts 'n Goblins was released as an arcade game, so it needed to induce players often drop a coin for profit. And players can reach the (real) ending or not, it was not an important thing for many arcade games then. I think Castlevania is much better than it to get praises in overseas.

I remember playing Ghosts and Goblins on my NES.  I was never able to beat it though - maybe I should try again on my emulator.  But I think the best type B game on NES has to be the Japanese Super Mario Brothers 2.  You try beating it with no state save and you'll be in for a real type B treat.  The 2nd best type B game for NES would be Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link.  I remember dying lots of times when I first played it on my NES.

Of course, I believe you can beat Ghosts 'n Goblins. Also, I expect you will upload and show your play videos of it on YouTube.

I'm guessing these "Game A" and "Game B" options in some NES games are related?

I see Ghosts 'n Goblins is less popular than Castlevania as Type B in overseas...

I could shill Castlevania till the day I die but put simply...

Castlevania:

- is built around its limited control scheme and is much more fair as a result of this

- has a life bar allowing multiple hits

- much better visuals and atmosphere

- ridiculously good soundtrack

- has a second loop but it's a completely optional bonus challenge

Ghosts 'n Goblins:

- asks too much of its player with a limited control scheme

- only two hits max and you're dead

- graphics are kind of ugly and don't quite hit the cartoonish charm it was going for

- decent melodies but much more repetitive

- requires you to beat the game twice just to see the real ending

Castlevania isn't without its rough edges but I'm willing to overlook them because there's just something about this game, man. Ghosts 'n Goblins is a bullshit arcade game that failed to adapt well to a console experience.

Good opinion, Satellite. I believe you have a point.

James seems to want challenging games of NES, so I recommend Ghosts 'n Goblins for him. Harder games are there, but I take out bad games many people say and kusoges.
