I looked up on http://www.google.com/hitchhiking myths which then links to websites that basically claims that it is a myth that hitchiking is way overly dangerous.

I myself have never picked up any hitchhikers nor ever hitchhiked at least not yet.

Hm, results actually claim it's not nearly as dangerous as people make it out to be. Most crimes are committed against hitchhikers, rarely on the driver. Still, hitchhiking is something that seems to be risky on both ends. I wouldn't want to be in a stranger's car nor would I want a stranger in my car. You accept those risks if you want to hitchhike or pick one up, but I imagine it's not nearly as dangerous as the myth claims.

I don't want to hitchhike and end up in someone's chili.

No thanks.

Odds don't really matter much to me. All it takes is being in that small percentile to be locked in someone's basement being forced to sing Oh Danny Boy! while having chocolate chip cookies shoved down your throat one after the other every 5 hours until you reveal the path to El Dorado, which you don't even know.

I will ony pick up a hitcher if they have their own towel.

No self-respecting hitcher goes without a towel.

I'll share my own little story.

One time, after work when I worked at CVS or Omnicare (Can't remember), there was a guy begging for money for food at the Taco Bell drive thru line. He came up to me and asked, but I didn't have anything. I had already ordered food. Then I told him to get into my car. I got my food, and I drove him to Cumberland Farms (Basically a gas/convenience store). He wouldn't take any of my Taco Be,, though. I told him to get anything he wanted. He didn't pick much, and I urged him to get more stuff. After it was said and done, I drove him back to the Taco Bell to ask people for more food.

He told me he had a pregnant girlfriend, and he was starting a new construction job soon. They lived on the train tracks in my town. I gave him my phone number (even though he didn't have a phone), and I don't think I've ever seen someone that grateful. Even though I never heard from him again, I hope I made an impact on this guy's life. I know he made an impact on mine.
