*transparent.. DAMN IT!

title. For example when you talk to someone the text can be unreadable, but i noticed in some games they have a small background behind text. How do you do that? If it is a script can someone give it to me so it goes behind all text/strings all the time..

You mean the background? When editing a string, go to the Attributes tab, and there should be a box below the line that says SFX:. Click the box, and pick the top-left of a two-by-two tile for the background.

That's what I did, at least.

He wants one with a transparent background, which isn't really easy to do. You can do what I did (and stole from Shane7227), and just checker tile the background:

It's not transparent, but it does the job more than well enough.

I don't really care if its like that ^. I just want a box behind text that makes it readable. So will gray's method work?

its 4v4 when u select a tile
(I forgot to high light it but its the box under SFX)
SO yes it will work.
You may need to modify some tiles to get it right (I had to add black to it since it was transparent) BUT might be different for you.

Hmmm, well you could have the box on a layer that appears after just a tenth of a second after being on screen. Then place tiles underneath where Link will hear the message that cycle to a combo that will trigger secrets and make the layer go. This cycle length must be lightly longer than the cycle length on the layer so that once you hear the message the box immediately vanishes. You also must cancel the secret sound so that it doesn't go off.

Note- Will not work if the Quest Rule Strings Freeze All Action isn't checked.

I hope that helps! :)

P.S-Just saw the last post... That's crazy! Never knew you could do that! Disregard what I just said!

I used a transparent layer and then made it disappear after a secret was triggered (the text disappears).

open up this quest and see..

Well, I didn't check peteandwally's quest file, but it sounds just like what I did. Since I'm using version 2.10, I used direct warps to warp you to the screen where the NPC talks. On this screen, I have layer 5 set as a screen that has the black box which, BTW, is one-and-a-half tiles high with the half-tile being above the full tile. Then, on the same screen with the black box, I have flag 16 set to all of the box with the secret set to a blank combo (I believe combo 49 is the standard blank combo for Classic).

That's it other than making sure "Enemies->Secret" is set for guy rooms using the screen that have a Shop room type (or anywhere it's supposed to disappear).
