This was pretty funny. I use Adblocker Plus mainly because a lot of sites seem to have so many advertisements that you have to actually search for the stuff you want, and a lot of download sites have advertisements made to look just like the download button you want to click. However, I also spend a lot of time on sites like That Guy With the Glasses, and it blocks the pre-video advertisements as well.

 

Today, I just discovered something kind of funny. They can figure out when you have a blocker program on, and are intentionally putting longer pauses before their videos when it detects one. Now, instead of a thirty second advertisement, it's a ninety second pause before the video comes on.

 

Seems rather dumb, but I thought that was a pretty amusing idea. They're even poking fun at you when they tell you about what they're doing. I figure that some of you guys are bound to already know about this, but did any of you find it a bit funny as well, or am I the only one?

Good. I'm glad they're doing something about use of AdBlocker. Look, those ads before videos are how people make money for their created content. Several of the people on sites like That Guy With The Glasses put a lot of time and effort into the content they create, and if people block the ads, they get absolutely nothing for making the video from those people. Asking people to sit through a 30 second ad before watching a 20 minute video (or even if they have a couple of midrolls, that's at most 1:30 of ad time for 20-30 minutes of video) doesn't seem oppressive or annoying, its necessary.

Yeah.  I'm glad Adblocker is starting to try to lean toward only blocking annoying ads while leaving unintuitive ads alone.  The reason I got adblocker was because of all the sites that would have ads that would pop up over content or play annoying sounds.  I try to whitelist sites that I enjoy and want to help out with (mostly sites with videos).

 

That being said, Adblocker oftentimes isn't an issue with most text or image ads on web sites.  Most of those are pay per click.  So if you're not going to click, it's really not hurting anyone if you block the ads.  However, most video websites are actually pay per view, and if you use adblocker, you don't pay the maker of the content.  The world revolves around money, so if people and companies aren't getting the money they think something is worth, then they're more likely to stop releasing content.

The ads don't bother me much. Besides, people make a nice chunk of green of ads to help keep their sites running. Yes, occasionally you get those malware ads but hey, its like you getting sick. Just suck it up... too bad we can't use PC tools to fix our sickness.

So you want the people whose videos and such have these ads to not make any kind of profit? You can't seriously expect them to do their stuff for free all the time—there wouldn't be any point to continuing if they get nothing out of it.

I only use it for those download sites that get flooded with ads and certain Youtube users that don't own the content that they're HEAVILY adding ads for.

I pretty much use it all the time.  The annoying bouncing ads on the sides of pages, or ads that look like a download button, or pop up ads (that some how sidestep popup blocker) are all examples of where it comes it handy.  I hardly ever go on other sites that have ads in the video (excluding Youtube), so I don't have any sites whitelisted.

They do though. They help advertise products to help business. They help the creators of the videos, too. They aren't a waste of time if they benefit at least someone.

I block every ad in existence, I hate seeing ads and some of them play music or some make noise and it drives me nuts.

And I could care less about if people need the money from ads. All I want to do is enjoy the internet and not fund other people though ad's.

Is that really fair to the people that put time and money into producing content, though? If you put the time and effort into creating something to share with people, especially if you do it regularly, would you consider it unreasonable to expect a little something in return?

I block ads on sites that I am neutral toward or do not want to support.

 

Otherwise I tend to whitelist sites that I like manually, unless they start introducing ads that are obtrusive.

No its not fair but I don't really care.

Well If I did create something and people enjoyed it that's fine with me. I wouldn't expect anything in return.

If I need money like most people do. I'll go do something to make some money in real life, not rely on money from some ad's.

That's one of the great things about the internet. Since it's not the same as TV, people can operate in nonstandard formats and do things you couldn't do successfully anywhere else. People like Yahtzee and the Angry Video Game Nerd have tapped into previously unaccessable markets with their formats. However, they are able to put the content out they do with ad support. So, they already do somethign that makes money in real life, but it crosses over directly with the internet. They are one in the same for a lot of people. So, even if its not about the money, they can still make a living doing something not only they love, but other people love as well. I guess I just personally don't get why watching ads to support them providing content you don't have to pay a dime for is a huge issue to you. Is there a particular reason?
