I own an old Dell Studio XPS 1640, and my computer is quite hot right now and was wondering how I can cool it down quickly and safely without damaging it.

Can't you refresh/flash the port if it's not working correctly? Otherwise tox_von is correct. I'm using one of those thingys currently. icon_smile.gif
Change your performance mode around as well! "Power saver" should help?
